Harvard: "It is time to end the low-fat myth"

Thursday May 12, 2011
oliveA panel of nutrition experts from the Harvard School of Public Health recently urged dieticians and professionals from the food industry to "end the low-fat myth". Martha Rose Shulman, food writer and cookbook author, reported that one panelist even challenged the audience to take a pledge to drop the term "low-fat" from their vocabulary, and that she herself took the pledge. Shulman also reports on a talk by Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, who said
"No randomized trial looking at weight change has shown that people did better on a low-fat diet," Mozaffarian told us, and there have been dozens of them. "For many people, low-fat diets are even worse than moderate or high-fat diets because they're often high in carbohydrates from rapidly digested foods such as white flour, white rice, potatoes, refined snacks and sugary drinks."
Exactly. Low-fat pretty much equals high-carb.

Of course, they go on to say that saturated fat is bad...but one battle at a time! For the time being, I'll take any steps in the right direction!

Low-Carb Cruise Report

I met lots of readers of this site, which was really delightful. And, of course, I heard lots of stories of lives changed by low-carb eating.

The way it worked was that 3 of the days we were at ports (Key West, Grand Cayman, and Jamaica) and the other two full days were crammed with wonderful low-carb speakers, a cocktail party (sugar-free cocktails!), and many chances to connect with each other. At dinner, we sat in the same area, and the speakers rotated so that every night we got to sit with a different low-carb expert. Read More...
