Givenation.com, a Somerville-based startup that helps nonprofits accept donations online, has named Jon Jennings vice president of business development.

Jennings has about as diverse a resume as you'll find at an Internet company. He is a former acting assistant attorney general at the U.S. Department of Justice, a former senior assistant at the White House and served as a former assistant coach for the Boston Celtics.

In his new role, Jennings will initiate and manage corporate and other strategic partnerships for the company, which was recently launched by Boston entrepreneur, philanthropist, and political activist Steven Grossman.

"As someone who operates a nonprofit, I know first hand how important funding is for fulfilling the mission of an organization," Jennings said. "Through my work at Givenation.com, I am thrilled to be in a position where I can help other nonprofits acquire the funding they need to make a difference in the lives of all of Americans."

Jennings recently left the DOJ, where was responsible for the agency's relationship with Congress. He reported directly to Attorney General Janet Reno. At the White House, he acted as the liaison to President Clinton's Initiative on Race.

In 1992, Jennings co-founded the Team Harmony Foundation with the late Lenny Zakim and the late Reggie Lewis. Now in its eighth year, the organization brings students and teachers together for anti-racism rallies.

Jennings was an assistant coach and scouting coordinator for the Celtics, and worked for the team in several different capacities for more than a decade, including the 1986 championship team.

Jennings has served on the Board of Directors for City Year, The Genesis Fund, The Kids Fund, Big Brothers, The Ford Hall Forum, Caring for Children Foundation, and the Daniel Marr Boys and Girls Club. He currently serves on the boards of the Lenny Fund and the Dimock Street Health Center.

Givenation.com is a privately held firm that allows donors to learn about a nonprofits and make credit card donations through a secure Internet connection.
