METALLICA's 'Black' LP Is Top-Selling Album Of SOUNDSCAN Era - Dec. 23, 2009
METALLICA's self-titled album from 1991 (also known as the "black" album) has surpassed SHANIA TWAIN's 1997 CD "Come On Over" to become the best-selling album since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales for Billboard on May 25, 1991.

"Metallica" has sold 15,490,000 copies. "Come On Over" has sold 15,487,000.

Nielsen SoundScan is an information system created by Mike Fine and Mike Shalett that tracks sales of music and music video products throughout the United States and Canada. Data is collected weekly and made available every Wednesday to subscribers, which include executives from all facets of record companies, publishing firms, music retailers, independent promoters, film and TV, and artist management. SoundScan is the sales source for the Billboard music charts.

Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales data for Nielsen on May 25, 1991.

METALLICA's top-selling albums during the SoundScan era (as of December 20, 2009):

01. "Metallica" (1991): 15,490,000
02. "…And Justice for All" (1988): 5,330,000 *
03. "Load" (1996): 5,049,000
04. "Master of Puppets" (1986): 4,578,000 *
05. "Ride the Lightning" (1984): 4,334,000 *
06. "Reload" (1997): 4,036,000

* Does not include sales prior to the start of the SoundScan era (May 25, 1991).

METALLICA's latest album, "Death Magnetic", has sold 1,853,000 copies in the United States since it was released in September 2008, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

shania twain > metallica

britney spears > shania twain

using common logic, metallica sucks.

love the 'tallica boys, it's amazing they've sold that many black albums. wish some bands nowadays could get up that high.

I have noticed on my CD (as well as other people's that i've seen) that you can barely see the Metallica logo in the top left corner (unlike the pic posted where you can see it clearly). Was this a screw up when the cds were pressed or was that how it was supposed to be.

Ok admit it. Metallica are great. Fair play to get consistantly high returns.
Lars really should get some lessons. Check out Joey Jordison playing Creeping Death with tallica at Download on YouTube - fantastic stuff.
James really should get some singing lessons.
Metallica really ought to get a different producer. Rick Rubin's team were not the right people to tackle Death Magnetic.
If only it sounded a little more like 'All Hope Is Gone' - now THAT'S a great sounding album.\m/

the beginning of the end of a once mighty metal giant. try as they may with DM, it is a far cry from trying to recapture where they came from. Mustaine has done much better in that aspect with the last 3 Megadeth albums.

I like the album but it was, IMO, by far the worst thing they`d done up until that point. It`s far more accesible though which probably explains it`s success...right time right place as well. How many has St Anger sold? That has to be one of the worst albums I`ve ever heard.

As for this whole Megadeth Vs Metallica nonsense. Am I allowed to like both??! I think the best work of either band is Metallica`s early stuff although really, the first 4 albums by both bands are awesome. But overall Megadeth have the better back catalogue...when both bands lightened up `Deth did it far better and the stuff Mustaine has brought out recently is much better than Metallica`s. Although Death Magnetic is pretty good.

Don't be so naive. Lars himself said a bunch of times that the band (meaning him and James, but mostly him) wanted to go more mainstream in the 90s.

Metallica may not of been their best album, but it did alot to promote the metal genre in the 90s. I think it almost single handedly saved metal from extinction in America during the rise of grunge. To say American heavy metal owes its existence to this album wouldn't be an understatement imho.

is played out beyond belief, but i can't deny the impact it had in 1991. I don't ever remember hearing drums that big on a rock/metal album before. that album sounded positively HUGE in 1991. just this big, towering and immense wrecking ball of sound.

it sounds quite tame by today's standards but in 91 it was the whole of the law.

You really are an angry young man, aren't ya!?

You're entitled to your opinion - but I'd wish you would show some openmindedness...

But you suffer from the classic "Blabbermouth-poster/TRUE METAL FAN syndrome": "Whatever I listen to is better than everything else-syndrome".

Have an open mind and you get to enjoy lots of different types of great music.

I for one listen to: Metallica, GnR, Maiden, Priest, AiC, Skid Row (with Bach), 80's pop/rock, 90's pop/rock, etc, etc.... there's so much good stuff out there! Just explore it and enjoy!

Happy holidays! (Or to some of you: Hail Satan!) :-D

why is when it comes to metallica good albums they dont want to repeat themselfs i.e. no master of puppets 2 or a throw back to justice. insted they hit us with load (a piss poor album) then the wammy of reload which is just load part 2 with worse B.O... yeah and another thing when metallica sold their singels in the 90s in 3 parts!!!! the only people that are gonna by all 3 parts are the hardcore fans, i think they have made more than enough with the help of the fans, i know ive paid for the same metallica albums loads of time. they just end out getting worn out but thats me i like to have the cds. but on the other hand its amazing that for a band thats ment to have sold out havnt put out one best of like the 3 or 4 other bands have and they havnt reissue or remastered any of their albums says a lot about them... or might just be that the best of would just have to be the 1st 4 albums put in a box set

They are "multi-faceted" I dunno what that means, but it sounds good! My interpretation of my comment. They make music that is relevant to the year or time of the release. Master of Puppets 2 ... Come on ... they got it right the 1st time and tell me it would have been better than ...And Justice For all?!?!?!? I'd rather have "Justice" in my collection than 2 Puppets albums. Remember the other 1 and 2 cd albums they have...hehem "LOAD and RELOAD" ugghhhh! Only reason I bought those LP.s is because they were so 'hot' after the BLACK ALBUM and no-one, no-one who liked them thought they could do anything wrong! Man, they sure showed us!!!! Anyway. Get a good piping hot cup of tea and sit down during these holiday times and enjoy the fact that DMag. is way better than LOAD/RELOAD, way better. It actually is fresh to me still and prob. still fresh for alot of people, esp. those who aren't 'Satisfied' with DMag. There's so much music on there and the songs are indeed a little longer than most bands (Ac/Dc) so they're not old so quickly; there's much more to digest. I think it has staying power and, in fact, will outlast most bands records from this CENTURY.

peace and HH's.

The Black Album is good, but Kill Em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, And Justice For All, and Death Magnetic are all better. Load and ReLoad were okay, but the two 'Loads', were more filler oriented with one good song on Load (Until It Sleeps) and two on ReLoad (Fuel and Unforgiven II). St. Anger ios the only one I truely hate. Long live Metallica. Ignore the haters.

So the previous number one was SHANIA TWAIN a pop country singer. It just shows u what America and the world is really into. Sappy soft politicaly correct music with no balls. I'm glad to see Metallica get some recognition but from the brainless Shania sheep public it doesn't mean much.

Would you rather the best-selling album be a country poptart hick like Shania Twain, or the thrashing Gods Metallica? After all, the Black Album serves HEAVILY as a metal gateway album, along with the Loads. And you know what? That justifies their #1 spot enough. On top of that, it's a great album. The production is simply amazing on that album.

It sounds so-LOUD-but it does NOT suffer from quality hearing like ...And Justice For All does with bass. I love pretty much every song on there-but the obsure songs for some reason are my favorite (Sad but True [well, it's not obscure], Don't Tread on Me, Through the Never, The God That Failed, My Friend of Misery, and The Struggle Within). How Metallica has gone without playing the last two live EVER-I don't know! Killer tunes. I love that bass playing on My Friend of Misery and that killer solo on The Struggle Within. I've proudly owned that album for 6 years (it was my 5th Metallica album-after the 4 before it!).

Also music is art. Either you like it, or you don't. It's not like with this album Metallica tried to make a billion dollars off it. Do you haters honestly think they sat around saying "hey! Let's try something new to get rich?" No! They thought "hey, let's take a risk and go into the unknown because we don't want to sound the same everytime!" Sure it was a bit sketchy after the Black Album, but at least they didn't sound the same like every other band.

They wanted to go slower-and what's the problem? Cliff in his last interview said he could see the band going slower. Slayer did it with South of Heaven (although the production was nowhere near as good, but the songwriting IMHO was better on South of Heaven). If you don't like it-fine.

Hell, they had bootleg sections for their crowds for years. That alone kept them as a viable act for most people. If that's "sellout worthy," then you gotta be crazy. I don't remember Bruce Dickinson, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, etc supporting that before the digital age, as much as I HEAVILY respect each of them.

Also lol at the guys saying they should sound more like Slipknot. Slipknot is a nu metal band. Never compare a true metal band to a nu metal band, since nu metal is essentially a half rapper, half rambler with random people behind the lead singer. And James' voice is original. He may not have the best, but just like his peers in Dave Mustaine, Tom Araya, and Phil Anselmo, you can ALWAYS tell when it's them.

Also while Dave Mustaine has been putting out more consisten albums in Megadeth (the last three have been killer!), he too will never be able to top Peace Sells or Rust in Peace again. Neither will Slayer. Neither will Anthrax. The reason why Megadeth is probably making the best albums is because Dave Mustaine doesn't know when he'll retire or not-which makes your music mean A WHOLE LOT MORE! With Slayer set to supposidly end in a few years ago, they're gonna kick it into high gear writing-wise, fast!

But hey, Metallica's made the longest albums since pretty much forever (Master of Puppets is about twice as long as Reign in Blood). That at least is a worthy accomplishment (although it takes them half a decade to make records these days, whereas Megadeth & Slayer do it every other year and Anthrax does it whenever they get their act together and make a SOLID lineup!). Death Magnetic is never boring, and while it is far from the greatest album, it is definitely a constantly entertaining one.
