Place Vendome - Place Vendome
Frontiers Records

file under hardrock / aor

Place Vendome - Place VendomeFerdi: Singer Michael Kiske (ex-Helloween, but you already knew that) has a problem with his credibility. For numerous times has the German singer declared that his interest in rock and metal was reduced to zero and that he never wanted to do it again. Still, he lends his voice to rock and metalprojects time and time again. Examples of this include Avantasia, Edguy, Timo Tolkki and Aina, as well as a number of soloprojects of which the alternative rockband band Supared was probably the project that determined the lowest point of his career. Place Vendome is his newest project, in which he once again returns to traditional hardrock. Hey, one must live, right?

It doesn't matter. What does matter, is that the Place Venome-debut can be regarded as the best thing Kiske recorded since his Keeper-days, as the whole cd is full of excellent melodic rock in the vein of Foreigner, Survivor and Journey. The combination Kiske + symphorock might sound strange at first, but it comes together really well when you listen to songs like 'Cross The Line' and 'I Will Be Waiting'. Kiske seems to be quite in his element on this cd. The soundscapes of keybordplayer Gunter Werno (Vandenplas) and the guitars of Uwe Reinenauer together with the drumming of Kosta Zafiriou form the foundation on which Kiske can show that his voice hasn't lost any of its power over the year. The driving force behind the album is the multi-skilled Dennis Ward, who is represented on this album as bassist, guitarist, keyboardplayer, background vocalist, songwriter and producer.

Insider may have noticed from the names above that Place Vendome consists almost completely of the German rockband Pink Cream 69, minus their vocalist Dennis Readman. As such, Place Vendome can be seen as PC69 together with Kiske and the keyboardplayer from Vandenplas. The fact that most of the songs were co written by Dennis Ward and Vandenplas-member Werno, means that this album warrants a purchase from fans of those bands too. The great production, excellent songwriting and the spellbinding vocals of Kiske make this record one that no fan should miss out on. Oh, and a pop quiz for the die-hards... That Andi Deris dude who replaced Kiske in Helloween, from which band did he come?
