Govt launching business schemes to end unemployment: Maqbool
LAHORE The government is introducing small industrial schemes at district level to create job opportunities for local people, said Punjab Governor Khalid Maqbool on Thursday.
Talking to journalists after the first convocation of the Hajvery University at Aiwan-e-Iqbal, the governor said the schemes would be planned to meet local needs and help the government employ jobless people. “I am visiting various districts for the same purpose,” he said.
Mr Maqbool said he would ask the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to derive a funding mechanism for private higher education institutions for research purpose. However, he urged universities to run courses keeping in view the international as well as the country’s financial needs.
He said the HEC was planning to set up a central student resource centre and other career counseling centres at every campus to help students find suitable jobs.
The governor said the reported rise in the stock exchange was a sign of the country’s journey towards a strong economy. “Economists are expecting that the Karachi Stock Exchange will go up to 7,000 points soon,” he said, adding the economy was directly linked with the rate of employment.
To a question, the governor said the government was committed to promoting education. “We have added 10,000 seats to provincial universities,” he said. He said several courses were being improved and modernised.
Earlier, addressing the convocation the governor, who is also patron of the Hajvery University, said the private sector was doing a great job in increasing the higher education literacy rate in Pakistan. Mr Maqbool congratulated the university management for considering opening of a new campus in Dubai.
The governor pressed private universities and colleges to take affordable fees from students and to meet educational standards. “The government will take action against fake and substandard campuses,” the governor warned.
Mr Maqbool said the government was doing its job by granting a charter to quality colleges.
He suggested private universities start distance learning and virtual modes of teaching.
The governor awarded medals and shields to the distinguished students in different courses. Earlier, the Hajvery University’s Board of Governors chairman, Atif Mushtaq, delivered his welcoming address. Staff Report
