Cape Coast Castle
Cape Coast Castle is described as one of the six most "beautiful" slave castles still in existence. It was originally built int he 1650s by the Swedes and is almost with a cannon shot of the Portuguese built slave castle, Elmina. Like many of the other slave castles this one changed hands a number of times. In 1660, it was taken over by the British and rebuilt and enlarged by them in 1662. In 1663, it was captured by the Dutch, 1664 recaptured by the British, imporved and enlarged byt he British in 1673, attacked by the native Africans of the land in 1681, and finally taken over by the French in 1703 and 1757. Today it is the Museum of Slavery, created by the Smithsonian Institue, and now caters to the increasing number of African Americans who arrive searching for their roots.
