Online accessibility for people with disabilities
All La Trobe websites are obligated to meet AA Success Criteria Levels of the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0.
To meet this target:
- page templates have been created to enforce coding standards and meet the checkpoints;
- a set of standard cascading style sheets control the presentation of content on La Trobe sites.
In addition, the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 1992 requires that universities provide online educational services in an accessible manner. La Trobe's Disability Action Plan (DOC 276KB) outlines how the University meets these requirements.
To meet its obligations under the DDA, Universities Australia has developed Guidelines on Information Access for students with print disabilities. It is estimated that more than 3% of Australians are blind, vision-impaired or have another form of print disability, and this number is increasing.
The requirements of the DDA apply equally to staff and students of the University. It is important that all staff be aware of the information contained in the guidelines and familiarise themselves with their responsibilities. Additional information is available in the University’s Web Development Guide [restricted]. The provisions of the DDA take precedent over any existing University policy or guidelines.
