Tango, Barn Dancing and More This Weekend

Plenty of places to break out your dancing shoes, this weekend in Sonoma.

  Put away your dancing shoes and put on your partying hats Friday for a talk and performance by San Francisco Tango artist Ana Teresa Fernandez, at the Sonoma Museum of Art starting at 7 p.m. Enjoy a taste of Argentina at a special Sonoma/Argentine wine bar. Saturday come celebrate the Harvest Moon with the Joe Chaplain Band's 5th annual tribute to the music of Neil Young. With special guests Sheila Whitney and Monica Mckey, get yourself to the Sonoma Community Center at 7 p.m. Still up for more dancing: The Grange Barn Dance starts at 8 p.m. Learn some country moves beforehand, then dance to accordian music, played by Art Peterson. $5 - 7 donation requestion, free for those under 21.  Looking for more to do this weekend? Honoring Vets and Helping Families This Weekend

Veterand Day Weekend had a huge number of events going on, and we found a few to highlight in the Sonoma Patch events calendar. --- The American Legion Jack London Post #489 and the VFW Bear Flag Post 1943 shall honor veterans at a ceremony celebrating unsung heroes Friday starting at 11 a.m.  at the Veterans Memorial Buildings and Community Centers featuring guest speaker Becky Peterson, a Sonoma resident and former Marine Corps colonel, who currently acts as special assistant to the chancellor at the California State University system on veteran and military and education matters. --- Saturday at 6 p.m. is the third annual Dance for the Troops at the Veterans Memorial Buildings and Community Centers, to honor all the brave men and women …

At Nuestra Voz, 'Dia de los Muertos' Celebrates Life by Death

Representing different families and nationalities, a series of alters to the dead remind celebrants of the brevity of life

At the Springs Village residents celebrate Dia de los Muertos, known in English as 'Day of the Dead,' with a series of vibrant alters: remembering family members through varied objects – a favorite pair of trousers is set out in memory of an older man, toy cars flank the photograph of a young boy.  But the real difficulty in celebrating this Mexican celebration of death is creating unity out of variation: how to celebrate a national holiday amongst a group of Mexican immigrants with widely different religious and cultural backgrounds, who are as likely to hail from Jalisco as Guanajuato.  "All of the elements are the same, but combined with the traditional religions – some states even with a different ethnicity – [the holiday is] always …
