X-Rays Find 513 U.S.-Bound Migrants Hiding In Trucks (VIDEO)

First Posted: 05/18/11 05:41 AM ET Updated: 05/18/11 11:50 PM ET

TUXTLA GUTIERREZ, Mexico -- Police in Mexico's southern Chiapas state found 513 migrants on Tuesday inside two trailer trucks bound for the United States, and said they had been transported in dangerously crowded conditions.

Some of the immigrants were suffering from dehydration after traveling for hours clinging to cargo ropes strung inside the containers to keep them upright as the trucks bounced along from the Guatemalan border, and allow more migrants to be more crammed in on the floor.

The trucks had air holes punched in the tops of the containers, but migrants interviewed at the state prosecutors' office said they lacked air and water. The trucks were bound for the central city of Puebla, where the migrants said they had been told they would be loaded aboard a second set of vehicles for the trip to the U.S. border.

"We were suffering, it was very hot and we were clinging to the ropes," said Mario, a 23-year-old Honduran migrant who identified himself only by his first name, for security reasons. Mexico's National Human Rights Commission says thousands of undocumented migrants are kidnapped and held for ransom by drug gangs in Mexico each year.

None of the migrants would say whether any drug gang had been involved in the mass smuggling scheme broken up early Tuesday when Chiapas state police discovered the migrants while using X-ray equipment on the trucks at a checkpoint in the outskirts of city of Tuxtla Gutierrez.

The migrants said the smugglers were charging them about $7,000 apiece to get them into the United States. A Guatemalan migrant who identified himself as Juan said remaining in his hometown in Guatemala was not an option, noting "a lot of us are Indians, and we can't stay in our homes. There is no work, and there's nothing to eat."

An agent for the National Immigration Institute who was not authorized to be quoted by name said it was the largest shipment of migrants detained in Mexico in recent years.

Police also arrested four people accused of smuggling the migrants, who are from Central and South America and Asia, Chiapas state prosecutors said in a statement.

The alleged smugglers tried to escape police but were chased down and captured, prosecutors said.

Story continues below

The immigration institute said in a statement that 410 of the migrants were from Guatemala, 47 from El Salvador, 32 from Ecuador, 12 from India, six from Nepal, three from China and one each from Japan, the Dominican Republic and Honduras. There were 32 women and four children among them.

In January, Chiapas state authorities discovered 219 migrants squeezed into a trailer truck.

Most of those migrants were from Central America but six were from Sri Lanka and four from Nepal.

Judging from the majority of anti-illegal immigration posts here on a middle to left web site, I have to wonder how a a pro-Mexico, pro-illegal invasion politician like Barbara Boxer won re-election?

Polls predicted a close race, yet she won handily.

Who voted for her? The illegals?

I guess they don't poll the illegals just before the election.......

First Huffpost. They are Illegal Aliens not migrants. Migrants are legal and don't sneak around. Second I am glad that according to our beloved president said the wall is finished. Makes me feel so much more secure.

Less than 24 hours later the Mexican Government has DEPORTED 400 of these people to Honduras. Our President stops law enforcement from deportind illegals, but no other country does, especially Mexico whose citizens make up most of our illegal population. Email Obama and let him know how you feel about this. http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact

You have to admit, though, that when you read about something like this, don't you get more comfortable that there aren't any terrorists lurking someplace in the 10/15/20/25/30 (take your pick) million illegal aliens already in the country "just looking for work"?

If illegal immigrants are willing to pay $7,000 and put up with this hardship, we should all draw one inescapable conclusion: they were certain that once they got past the border, they were home free.

No one would pay that much if they thought there was any chance they would be caught and deported in the first week or month or even year. If transit is worth this much, it is only because the millions of illegal aliens currently in the country are telling their countrymen that, for all the noise in the newspapers, there is no real risk of being caught and deported.

We need to change that message by enforcing our laws and publicizing the widespread effort!

7,000 dollars is a fortune for poor person south of the border.

Where and how do they get that type of money? Crime?

Chipotle Mexican Grill?

No, I'll bet it's an Arizona or California labor contractor. There were 1200 farm labor contractors in California last I looked. They are all owned by Spanish surnamed individuals and they hire workers that are then hired out to mainstream ag companies. I think this is the way that major employers can go through the motions of hiring legal workers.

Per the latest stats - 1200 get caught per day but 4000 illegals still manage to make it into the country illegally every day! Despite Obama and the bleeding hearts club crowing about supposed record deportations at 400,000, any fool can see that the number of illegals is still not close to coming down or being under control. By next year we will officially be at 15 million illegals with no end in sight - yet we are being told with a straight face to back amnesty?

Until we can properly control the situation, either through
- enforcement on companies hiring them,
-enforcement in the communities that continue to enable them,
- or since the feds seem to have blown off the other 2 - enforcement at the border,

there is really nothing to discuss about either the Dream Act or Amnesty.

It's a shame really, but we can't grant amnesty under any circumstances. We did it once before and if we do it again we will never be able to meaningfully enforce this or any other immigration system again.

Half of Mexico was over here shopping at the Outlet Malls in central Tx during holy week. They spend major money and don't think twice about dropping $500-600 for a designer purse.

1.5 million illegals are entering each year at the moment. 1.5 m @ $7000 each = $10.5bn industry.

If that were a company, It would rank about #230 in the fortune 500. Even at half that it would be bigger than Mutual of Omaha at #398.

Don't feel a bit sorry for these Mexicans trying to enter this country illegally. so glad they were caught. We need tighter control at the borders and STOP ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION

Don't we have a peace corps in these countries? These people are starving and anything to get them on their feet is good. Seeds. Crops are NOT expensive
