1. How do I use search?

There are two types of searches you can perform on FT.com. You can find a term or phrase used in any of our news articles, or you can find a stock quote.

News Search

You can search for a single word, such as recession, by typing it into the search box.

To search a phrase, enclose the phrase in quotation marks, such as "credit crunch".

You will see the word or phrase you typed in at the top of the search results page along with the total number of results.

Our results page ranks the most relevant results highest. In other words, the results that best match your search term are at the top of the search results list. If FT.com has topic pages that are relevant to your search, we will list them in the "FT Suggests" box above the list of relevant articles.

You can re-order your results by using our Sort By functionality which is located above the search results. Click date to re-order your results according to the date, with the most recent articles at the top of the page.

Quote Search

If you wish to search for a stock quote, click the quote radio button to the right of the search box, and start typing in your query. Our predictive text functionality will show you the choices we have available for your term. It shows the name of the company, country where it is listed, its ticker symbol and exchange.

Once you click into the quote, you will see the company's tear sheet with the most current financial data available.

2. Can I exclude and include words in my search terms?

By default, our search engine looks for all the words you have typed in and includes them in your search. However, if you need to include some words and not others then use the "+" and "-" operators.

To include words, just type a plus sign "+" in front of each one. For example, if you want to find articles that contain "advertising" and "online" then type: +advertising +online.

To exclude words, just type a minus sign in front of each one. For example, if you want to find articles that contain "advertising" but not "online" then type: +advertising -online.

Either / or, if you wish to search for articles where either terms are used then use the FIND(or command and specify the list of words to include. For example to search for wind or air then type: FIND(or(wind, air)).

Alternatively, you can use the people, company, topics, comment by and places filters in the right hand column of the page to filter by or exclude any of the terms listed.

3. How do I get more or fewer search results?

You can get more or fewer search results by using the results filters on the right hand column of the page.

By default, our search archive goes back five years. If you wish to search for a shorter timeframe, use the date filter to change the dates.

You can use the terms listed in the people, company, topics, comment by and places filters to refine your search, run a new search or exclude a term from your search.

4. How do I search for a journalist's name or a headline?

If you wish to restrict your search to just the headlines, use the FIND command and specify that you want to look in the headline. For example, to find the phrase "interest rates" in the headline, type FIND(headline:("interest rates" )).

If you wish to find articles written by one of our journalists you can restrict your search to the article's byline using the FIND command with "byline". in front of each. For example, typing FIND(byline:("martin wolf")) finds only Martin Wolf's articles.

Our searches are NOT case sensitive. Therefore regardless of whether you use upper case, lower case or a combination of both for your search terms our search engine will automatically search for all versions. The only exception is when you are using the FIND command. FIND must be entered in upper case and the fields byline and headline must be in lowercase.

5. How do I search for specific dates?

Our date filter works the same way as most date filters you find on travel sites. You can search for a specific date by selecting the same start date and end date in our date filter. To search for a date range, select the start date and end date of the dates you wish you wish to search.

6. How do I save my search?

You can save your search by using our bookmark link at the top of the search results. This will save the search in your browser's bookmarks. You can also email the results to yourself or a colleague by using the email link at the top of the results page.
