The professoriate

AC Grayling MA, DPhil (Oxon), FRSL, FRSA is one of Britain’s foremost academics and public intellectuals and is currently Professor of Philosophy at Birkbeck College, University of London. He is also a Supernumerary Fellow of St Anne’s College, Oxford. He has written and edited over 20 books on philosophy and other subjects and is a frequent broadcaster and writer for national newspapers and other publications. He sits on the editorial boards of several academic journals, and for nearly ten years was the Honorary Secretary of the principal British philosophical association, the Aristotelian Society.

Simon is one of the country’s leading philosophers. He is well known for his efforts to make philosophy accessible to a wider public. He is currently Professor of Philosophy at the University of Cambridge and Research Professor at the University of North Carolina.

Sir David is an eminent historian and noted commentator and broadcaster on British life, especially the British Monarchy. He is currently lecturing at Princeton. Since 2005, he has been the Chairman of the National Portrait Gallery and Director of the Institute of Historical Studies at London University.

Linda is a leading historian of Britain, empire and nationalism. She is currently Shelby M C Davis Professor of History at Princeton University. While living in the UK Linda served on the board of the British Library and on the Council of the Tate Gallery.

Sir Partha is the Frank Ramsey Professor of Economics at the University of Cambridge; Fellow of St John’s College, Cambridge; Honorary Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge; and Professor of Environmental and Development Economics at the University of Manchester. Research interests have covered welfare and development economics; the economics of technological change; population, environmental, and resource economics; social capital; the theory of games; and the economics of malnutrition.

Richard is a British evolutionary biologist and bestselling science author. He was formerly Professor for Public Understanding of Science at Oxford and is a fellow of New College, Oxford. His book The God Delusion has sold over two million copies. He will be Professor of Evolutionary Biology teaching on the required Science Literacy course.

Ronald Dworkin is one of the world’s leading authorities on constitutional law. He is a Professor of Law and Philosophy at University College London and Professor of Law at New York University.

Niall Ferguson is one of the world’s leading historians specialising in financial and economic history and the history of colonialism. He is the Laurence A Tisch Professor of History at Harvard University as well as Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School. He is a regular television and radio broadcaster on both sides of the Atlantic.

Steve Jones is leading scholar in the area of genetics. He is presently Professor of Genetics and Head of Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment at University College London. He is one of the best-known contemporary writers on evolution. Steve will be Professor of Biological Sciences lecturing on genetics, biodiversity and climate change on the Science Literacy course.

Lawrence is foundation professor in the School of Earth and Space Exploration and Physics Professor at Arizona State University. He has advised Barack Obama on science policy. Lawrence will be Professor of Science teaching cosmology and particle physics on the Science Literacy course.

Steven is a Canadian-American experimental psychologist, cognitive scientist, linguist and author of popular science. He is a Harvard College Professor and Johnstone Family Professor in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University and is known for his wide-ranging advocacy of evolutionary psychology and the computational theory of mind.

Sir Christopher is a British literary critic and scholar. He is the William M. and Sara B. Warren Professor of the Humanities at Boston University (U.S.) and Co-Director of the Editorial Institute at Boston University, and was Professor of Poetry at the University of Oxford from 2004 to 2009. He is the immediate past-president of the Association of Literary Scholars and Critics.

Peter is the Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics at Princeton University, and laureate professor at University of Melbourne. He specialises in applied ethics. He is well known for his book Animal Liberation, widely regarded as the touchstone of the animal liberation movement.

Adrian is one of the UK’s leading legal academics. He is Professor of Civil Procedure at the University of Oxford. He is Editor of the Civil Justice Quarterly.
