Sacha Baron Cohen As 'The Dictator': First EXCLUSIVE Look (PHOTO)

First Posted: 06/ 9/11 10:30 AM ET Updated: 06/ 9/11 10:32 AM ET

And you thought Borat and Bruno were wild disguises.

Debuting exclusively at The Huffington Post, here is the first image of Sacha Baron Cohen in his Saddam Hussein-inspired costume for his new film, "The Dictator." About a Hussein-like dictator who gets secretly replaced by a lookalike goat herder and now must find new meaning in a life in New York City, the film is inspired by "Zabibah and the King," a book about a benevolent dictator that was revealed to be written by Hussein himself.

Baron Cohen will star as both the dictator and herder, and last month, it was announced that Anna Faris will play the NYC organic store owner who opens his eyes to new possibilities.

The book itself is about a benevolent, beloved king who falls in love with a beautiful, victimized girl who was raped by her cruel husband. Believe it or not, it's a subtle allegory for Iraq and the United States -- the king (based, obviously, on Saddam) is the peaceful Iraq, while the cruel, rapist husband is the Gulf War-waging United States.

The log line from Paramount, the film's production home, turns subverts the premise, saying, "The film tells the heroic story of a dictator who risked his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed."

Directed by Larry Charles, the film hits theaters May 11th, 2012.

Sacha Baron Cohen is actually a very good looking guy as well as brilliant, provacative, and side-splitting funny. He does comedy at its best - very close to the truth, dangerous, fearless. I look forward to seeing his latest movie. It's about time that someone called America out for its aggression in Iraq. You can count on Sacha to always be over the top - in all the good and bad senses of the words.

The only think shocking to me is to see him out of character - say at a party with his wife. In reality, he always looks out of place and uncomfortable whereas in character he looks supremely confident and at home.

I could wet my pants daily thinking about Borat and laughing. Bruno, not so much! I wanted to love it, but it didn't really work. Let's hope he's back on track with this one.

I do not want to be a wet blanket, and I find him very funny, but i wonder if any kind of thought was put into a jewish guy making fun of a (former)muslim leader.

Suppose that it would be considered grounds for retaliaton?

SBC rips it out of everyone.
He rips it out of hypocrites and liars.
Be sensitive or whatever, but no group deserves blanket 'special' protection of their feelings.

In any case, like Saddam gave a **** about being religious.

Sacha himself is a conservative Jew from a conservative upper class Jewish family of intellectuals in Great Britain. His wife converted to Judaism when she married him.

You can count of Sasha putting a lot of thought into everything he does. That's why he's so great! He was also Jewish when he played the fabulous Borat - a Moslem like Saddam. He is fearless. Being Jewish and playing Borat and Saddam is part of is point that all of the labels are meaningless. Get it?

Borat was genius, Bruno was awful, hopefully this will exceed them both.

That's the only funny thing he's ever done (his participation in Shaggy's video, "Me Julie", was hilarious). It's all been downhill since then.

"Believe it or not, it's a subtle allegory for Iraq and the United States -- the king (based, obviously, on Saddam) is the peaceful Iraq, while the cruel, rapist husband is the Gulf War-waging United States."

Listen, I'm as not-gun-toting-conservative as the next guy, but this just strikes me as kinda crazy. The United States' is being compared to a cruel raping husband? Iraq is a mess and we helped make it so....but comparing the US to Ike Turner and pre-war Iraq to some kind of Eden is misguided and disingenuous at best. Iraqi citizens have lived under horrible conditions before and after the invasion. It's not like the streets were paved with licorice and puppy dogs and then the US showed up and now it's nothing but sulphur clouds and blood blisters.

FUNNY, I THOUGHT the benevolent, beloved king would be USA, beautiful, victimized girl would be the people of Iraq, and the cruel husband was Saddam...

the book that was written by suddam, of course he put that spin on it. i doubt the movie puts that kind of thought into it.

I'd say thanks for the suggestion but I think you're being demeaning. I'm aware enough of the US' sordid past in Iraq to know we by no means have a solid foundation upon which to stand as "liberators." I simply think that castigating the US as a archetypal villain and Iraq as the Shire is oversimplifying and, frankly...wrong.

Keep in mind that the book was written by Saddam Husein.
