Description
Annual Institute on Christian-Muslim Relations
June 12-18, 2011
Georgetown University
Washington, DC

Georgetown University offers this intensive six-day institute on its historic campus in the nation’s capital. Co-Sponsored by Hartford Seminary’s Duncan Black MacDonald Center for the Study of Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations and Georgetown University’s Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, the institute is ecumenical in its scope and outreach and interreligious in its structure. It is ecumenical because Christian pastors and pastoral workers from all churches are welcome to learn about Islam. It is interreligious because imams and Muslim community leaders are welcome to learn about Christianity and to join Christian participants in study and discussion of Christian-Muslim relations.

The institute unfolds over the second full week of June, beginning with a reception and orientation on Sunday evening, June 12, and concluding with a wrap-up session on Saturday morning, June 18. The 2011 institute is the sixth one co-sponsored by the nation’s two leading academic centers devoted to Christian-Muslim relations. Sessions run Monday through Friday in the mornings and afternoons with evenings free. Christian participants will visit a mosque on Friday during prayer. Muslim participants will visit Christian churches and will be guests at a worship service. The institute follows a seminar format with 20-30 participants gathered around a conference table with facilitators.

The facilitators of the sessions are experts in their fields, both Muslims and Christian. Among those assisting this year are Suendam Birinci (Hartford Seminary) Yvonne Y. Haddad (Georgetown University), Leo Lefebure (Georgetown University), Daniel Madigan, S.J. (Georgetown University), Sulayman Nyang (Howard University), John O. Voll (Georgetown University), and Timur Yuskaev (Hartford Seminary).

Tuition and housing costs are kept to a minimum. This year’s tuition is $800. Rooms are available on campus for $62 a night, plus minimal additional costs. Parking is available for the week for $75. Participants are responsible for meals and travel.

FOUR SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR MUSLIM PARTICIPANTS: Scholarships are available to cover tuition, housing and parking if needed.

Participants are responsible for travel and meals.

The deadline for applications is May 2, 2011; final acceptance by May 16, 2011.
