Presidential Belief Litmus Test
The only time I have attended religious services in recent years is funerals and weddings. It has not always been that way. I was an altar boy in early elementary school. My family moved around a lot but I spent most of my time through 7th grade in Catholic schools. 6/19 7:23 PM
Bonnie Craig Jurors Did Their Job
The stakes could not have been higher. A man's liberty hung in the balance. Justice for a wounded but healing family, and for a lovely young girl long since gone but never forgotten, teetered between realization and disappointment. Responsible for determining the outcome, there stood twelve ordinary people, just folks from our community, their shoulders laden with the weight of the job before them. But they did not shrink from the task and they did not shirk their obligation. 6/17 10:58 AM
Alaska Musher's "Temporary" Suicide Sparks Mental Illness Discussion
MANIC-DEPRESSIVE - 6/16 3:54 PM
Last week I wrote a Compass piece for the Anchorage Daily News, which reflected upon the parking situation at Chugach State Park's exceedingly popular Glen Alps Trailhead (see "Glen Alps Parking Appropriation: Yes, with Reservations," below). Here I'd like to add a few more thoughts for consideration. 6/11 8:01 PM
Due to having been out of state to attend to family matters I didn't have opportunity to participate in my friend Geoff's discussion of "racism." I wish to enter the fray, if somewhat belatedly. 6/6 7:02 AM
March 25, 1911 was a glorious spring Saturday in New York City's Greenwich Village. About 600 workers at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory were just winding up the long workday sewing light cotton shirtwaists (fashionable high-necked blouses) when a fire broke out on the 8th floor. Within eighteen minutes the flames engulfed the top three floors of the ten story building. 3/26 9:17 PM
AHFC Gouging On Apartment Interest Rates?
Testifying to the October 2010 Board meeting of Alaska Housing Finance Corporation, I objected again to the higher interest rates charged for apartment financing. Since October, nothing has changed. For the last three years, nothing has changed. AHFC continues to gouge Alaska small businesses - requiring 35% higher interest rates than comparable apartment lenders. If Wells Fargo did that, they would be charged with predatory lending and prosecuted. Excessive interest rates hurt the very housing AHFC's mission is to help. 3/11 3:57 PM
I've tried to stay away from taking part in Palin bashing over the past couple years. That band wagon has been full enough, and paying her any attention only serves to legitimize her as relevant. And not to pile on as yesterday's "leaked" insider manuscript further discredits her, but she still had the audacity to weigh in against union leaders in Wisconsin yesterday. Now she's sticking her unwanted finger in labor's own hornet's nest. 2/19 11:07 AM
I'll get straight to it: The Knik bridge is an ego-driven boondoggle benefiting a handful of consultants and the legacy delusions of a few politicians. Let's think long-term and big picture: How does Alaska compete in the world economy? My hunch is that it's not by building bridges to swamps and farmland. 2/18 1:18 PM
