Iran's Basiji Blogosphere
Tehran plans to counter online criticism by creating thousands of pro-government blogs.-
Instead of pouring all of its resources into policing and shutting down anti-government speech on the internet (see next photo), Iran's strategy appears to be aimed at drowning out the opposition with its own army of bloggers.
-
Below a screenshot of Iran's Cyber Police website, currently under construction.
-
Iran has been active in launching thousands of blogs in support of the country's Basiji paramilitary force. The initiative is ongoing and was originally announced in 2008.
-
The Basiji blogs promote nationalistic ideals and echo similar themes found in religious blogs in Iran. Some see this as a move to counter the threat of the reformist and secular philosophies in the Iranian blogosphere.
