It's Time for Our Troops to Come Home

Posted: 06/ 9/11 02:33 PM ET

In the aftermath of September 11th, our nation went to war in Afghanistan. We had three goals: to dislodge the Taliban government, destroy al Qaeda training camps, and to bring to justice those who masterminded the attacks.

Thanks to our men and women in uniform, the Taliban government was quickly removed from power. Moreover, we destroyed terror training camps, and now al Qaeda operatives in Afghanistan number fewer than 100, as noted by CIA Director Leon Panetta and other military experts. And just last month, U.S. Special Forces succeeded in killing Osama bin Laden, just as we have taken out so many other senior al Qaeda leaders over the last decade.

Now it's time for our troops -- who have served so long and so well -- to come home.

Our national security demands that we continue to root out al Qaeda, wherever in the world they may hide -- not that we engage in an ambitious nation-building exercise in Afghanistan. After nearly 10 years and hundreds of billions of dollars later, we should safely and expeditiously end our war in Afghanistan, start a sizeable and sustained withdrawal of our troops next month with a goal of ending the combat and nation-building mission as soon as possible, and use the hundreds of billions of dollars in savings to reduce the deficit and make smart investments here at home.

Yesterday's report from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee highlights the inherent flaws in a nation-building strategy in Afghanistan. The study found that the nation-building attempt has had limited success and has flooded areas with rebuilding money with little to no oversight, distorting local economies in ways that are simply unsustainable and contributing to the corruption that undermines the development of capable institutions.

Our enemies are operating in countries around the world, and we need to take the fight to them with all of the tools at our disposal. But we don't need to engage in nation building to do so. The recent operation against Osama bin Laden highlights the successes of a global, comprehensive, counter-terrorism strategy, relying on intelligence, special forces, covert actions, and the many other tools at our disposal. We took out bin Laden in the suburbs of Islamabad, Pakistan, not in Afghanistan. Neither leading a decades-long nation-building process nor refereeing internal power struggles is a national security priority of the United States. And lord knows we can hardly afford the hundreds of billions of dollars it is costing to pursue a mission that is not critical to our security.

That is why I am working with many Senate colleagues to shift course in Afghanistan. Next month the President is scheduled to announce plans for troop withdrawals. Soon, we will send a letter to the President urging that the plan be a sizable and sustained reduction of U.S. military forces in Afghanistan, not just a token reduction in the troop levels. The letter has the support of many distinguished former military leaders, as well as peace advocacy groups such as the Council for a Livable World, and thousands of citizens. I urge you to lend your voice to these efforts.

The future of Afghanistan will be decided by Afghans. Only Afghans can choose to root out corruption in their government and create a sustainable economy that works. It is time to clear the path to let Afghanistan create their own self-determination. America must focus on keeping our people safe and getting our economy growing.

Secretary of Defense Gates even said "anyone who proposes sending a large land army into asia again needs to have their head examined" they know they f*cked up by deploying so many troops overseas all at once. Henry Kissinger even said in Times magazine this month that if he knew that it would take more than 10 years to nation build he never would have endorsed this invasion. We need a controlled withdraw now before we go broke and are forced to withdraw. We owe it to our servicemen to get out safely with our army still intact

Hey Senator --

I'd have more confidence in your effort succeeding if you would be willing to "out" your Senate and House colleagues who have been bought and paid for by the military industrial complex.

Are you willing to take to the Senate floor and publicly announce the names of your colleagues who are proxies for the Halliburtons, KBRs, Blackwaters, Lockheed Martins, Raytheons and Northrop Grummans of the world?

If you're willing to do that, then I'll tip my hat to you for giving it your best shot. If you're not, then I'll know you deem it more important to maintain collegial relationships with your fellow legislators.

Failed world dominance in the form of nation building has failed? What will we need to do next to enhance this nations despicable reputation as home of justice and liberty for all? As we terrorize nation after nation with smart bombs, armed drones. False intelligence brings the US fighting force into hazardous situations where there need be none of the kind. Our role as I see it globally is to build up our own country. Maintain what was once a haven for tired, poor, repressed individuals and families. Our leadership worldwide is not in our powerful fighting force. (which should be the best in the world defensibly) Our power is in the inalienable rights of freedom given all men. Opportunistic endeavors from new immigrants if legal need to be supported from public as well as private institutions. This country was built with fresh ideas from great minds of immigrants. Now is the time to challenge the citizenry of our nation. Truth in promising upward mobility needs to be enhanced and maintained. The american dream of security and safety in the pursuit of happiness needs to apply to all people in this land. Not just the affluent.

The facts related to this comment have not been proven justifiable to anyone.

Believe it or not, I've heard that many times in America's past. Seems to take forever though.

I pray we get out as soon as possible....we should NEVER have been over there in the first place.
G.H. Bush finished this country off financially going to war in the Middle East, which will be his legacy.

Yeah, Secretary of Defense Gates even said "anyone who proposes sending a large land army into asia again needs to have their head examined" they know they f*cked up by deploying so many troops overseas all at once. Henry Kissinger even said in Times magazine this month that if he knew that it would take more than 10 years to nation build he never would have endorsed this invasion. We need a controlled withdraw now before we go broke and are forced to withdraw. We owe it to our servicemen to get out safely with our army still intact.

I agree, we have far more important matters here at home to attend to and it seems to be a merry go-round with no accomplishment.
Bring them HOME!

Yet.. Bush finished off this country financially with the wars? When you compare the costs of the wars to other expenditures, no. Yes a lot of money yet not on that scale.

Plus.. nothing about Obama? He's not only 'Continued' the wars, he's actually 'Increased' the fighting, commitment and funds. He's 'Expanded' military operations Egypt, Libya, what about him and his increases and 'Continuation' of Bush's policies?
Yea...nothing noted there though huh?

Baloney about it being time for the Afghans to decide their future. It is an unwinnable war and we never should have been there, much less escalated. A year after we're gone, you'll never know we were there. get out today.

It's time. We've all but eliminated Al Quaeda in Afghanistan, we got the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks, and it's time to bring our men and women home. With all the honor and respect we can muster for a job well done.

When a nation of people cannot even discern fact from fiction as to the people who put our troops there & why demanding a full criminal investigation & complete withdrawal with hundreds of thousands if not millions of Americans marching on WA DC as we did during the Viet Nam War

it's over.

This country has not only lost it's honor, but it's sense of right from wrong to correct it.

“Civilization will not last, freedom will not survive, peace will not be kept, unless a very large majority of mankind unite together to defend them and show themselves possessed of a constabulary power before which barbaric and atavistic forces will”

I gained respect for Johnson on March 31, 1968 when he addressed the nation and said, "Accordingly, I shall not seek, and I will not accept, the nomination of my party for another term as your President"

I believe George W. Bush should have, for the sake of our nation, done the same!

I believe if the current president, whom I voted for, should do the same if he doesn't pull the troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan tomorrow!

This is going to end the same way if we pull out tomorrow or 10 years from tomorrow; the only difference will be the increase of loss of lives, crippling of young men and women now serving and throwing more money at a lost cause.

We are nation building the wrong nation! Forget Afghanistan and start building up America; building America will be an effort that will benefit everyone.

I agree completely that the troops should be withdrawn.

However, the notion that the current government in Afghanistan will be able to sustain itself, create "security" (whatever that means) or a sustainable economy (other than the opium trade) is nonsense. Afghanistan is more a region with a collection of tribes than it is a real country. It will descend further into chaos as soon as the foreign troops leave. If it achieves something like a central government on its own, it will be a repressive one. None of this is an argument for keeping US or other foreign troops in Afghanistan. The problems there cannot be fixed with military might and staying longer only prolongs the inevitable collapse, perhaps even making it worse.

I am 100% behind leaving ASAP. However, let's not try to fool anyone into thinking that anything constructive has been accomplished or that the Afghan people will arrive at a state of security and economic sustainability that bears even the faintest resemblance to the dream of Western style republics.

I will send a letter to Senators Feinstein and Boxer voicing my support for your bill. Please, make every effort to cajole, intimidate or embarrass your colleges into supporting your efforts. Thank you.
