Two violent crashes took place on Saturday at the 24 Hours Of Le Mans, one of auto racing's most prestigious events, but the affected drivers seem to have escaped OK. (Scroll down for videos.)

Shortly after the race began this morning, Audi's Allan McNish collided with a slower car and plunged into the outside wall. McNish amazingly walked away from the crash under his own power.

"I'm glad to be alive," McNish said.

The second crash involved Audi driver Mike Rockenfeller after nightfall. Rockenfeller lost control of his vehicle, prompting ambulances, recovery trucks and safety cars to scramble to the scene. Rockenfeller was immediately evaluated but is "OK," according to reports.

The 24 Hours Of Le Mans is the world's oldest sports car endurance race, ran annually in France since 1923, per Yahoo Sports.

Yeah, this is a problem with LMP, F1, and other elite classes of motorsport in which handling is extremely sensitive to the high levels of aerodynamic downforce generated by the bodywork.

These cars are designed in wind tunnels to run in clean air. When they approach other cars on the circuit, the flow of air over the car is disrupted. The car loses downforce and grip, possibly while the driver is attempting to maneuver around a slower car. Mayhem ensues.

Allan McNish is arguably the most talented sports car driver in the world. He doesn't understeer into a slower GT car unless there was some serious rearward shift in the aero balance of his car as the front end splitter suddenly stalled in the turbulent wake vortices coming off that Ferrari.

It's an issue with racing these kinds of cars. They're more like inverted fighter jets than street-legal supercars. These cars can achieve superhero cornering speeds because the way they work the air. But as soon as the air no longer behaves like it does in the wind tunnel, they lose their superpowers and turn back into a pumpkin. And then all bets are off.

Those look like cell phone crashes

When the crashes look terrible, they're actually better for the driver. The cars are designed to break into a million bits to disperse the energy. It's the crashes that look mild that are dangerous. If you watch Dale Earnhardt's crash it looks very tame, and yet he died in it.

The 1955 Le Mans disaster occurred during the 1955 24 Hours of Le Mans motor race, when a crash caused large parts of racing car (Mercedes-Benz) debris to fly into the crowd. The driver (Pierre Levegh) was killed, as were 83 spectators.[1] A further 120 people were injured. In terms of human toll, it is the most catastrophic accident in motorsports history.[1]

It didn't help Levegh's Mercedes had experimental magnesium body panels, which were very light, but which also burned like crazy. They couldn't put the car out because the magnesium would burn no matter what you throw on it they just had to let it burn out. The driver didn't stand a chance, nor did anyone pieces of it landed on.

24 hours is really real racing.. but don't be fooled racing is racing. In the 24 hours, you don't have lamebrains like childress or busch to fill your need for WWE.
NASCAR is no way like it used to be when the fans came in droves to watch a race. Now it is all sponsors an catch phrases like if ya ain't bumping ya ain't racing (which to a real racer is like sayin..if ya ain't cheating you ain't racing.)..you win on the track by being the fastest or the one to cross the line first.. not the one who knocks the most people out of their way or destroys the most cars of the other drivers.

Golly, I raced a 47 Plymouth in Stock Jalopy class on the 1/4 mile back in '60. D'ya think ida made it to LeMans by now? (If I wouldn't have demo'd it the 5th time out?)
