About ICGC Fellowships

ICGC offers fellowships providing financial support for graduate students at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities.

Nominees should have backgrounds and interests which identify them as outstanding students who are clearly committed to the interdisciplinary study of the global south in the context of global change. We encourage nomination of exceptionally capable students especially but not only from the global south and U.S. communities of color.

SPH Students

Prospective School of Public Health (SPH) students are eligible to be nominated for three different types of ICGC Fellowship: The Compton, Scholar, and Mellon Fellowships. All three are extremely competitive, and SPH only supports one ICGC Fellow each academic year.

All students applying to School of Public Health degree programs (i.e., MPH, MS, and PhD programs) are eligible, regardless of degree sought.

Three ICGC Fellowships

1. Compton-
Eligibility: ICGC-Compton International Fellowships provide research support to graduate students from sub-Saharan Africa or Latin America whose studies and research will address issues of peace, human security, and conflict resolution in these regions, especially in relation to population and environmental concerns

Successful applicants will have research interests that address the interdisciplinary study of issues of peace, human security, and conflict resolution in Africa or Latin America, and ideally look to interdisciplinary connections among environment, population and peace

2. Scholar-
Applicants should have backgrounds and interests which identify them as outstanding students who are clearly committed to the interdisciplinary study of the global south in the context of global change.

3. Mellon-
The ICGC-Mellon Scholar Fellowships are a collaborative program of ICGC and the Center for Humanities Research (CHR) at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) in Cape Town, South Africa, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the University of Minnesota. ICGC-Mellon Scholar Fellowships support graduate students whose research interests emphasize humanistic and interpretive social science perspectives. Additionally, nominees are expected to conduct their dissertation research in southern Africa.

Departmental Nomination

In order to be considered for any ICGC Fellowship, students must submit both a Request for Departmental Nomination, and a Notice of Interest form to ICGC.

The deadline for the Request for Departmental Nomination to the School of Public Health is midnight CST, Jan. 24, 2011.
