Tim Thomas deal puts cap pressure on Chiarelli

As Tim Thomas [stats] and Peter Chiarelli met the press yesterday morning to discuss the goalie’s four-year, $20 million contract extension, the general manager acknowledged the deal makes the Bruins [team stats]’ salary cap situation for next season a more difficult juggling act.

“This is our job,” said Chiarelli before the Thomas-backed B’s 1-0 victory over the New York Rangers at the Garden. “We have to figure out the puzzle. We have to make decisions. I’d like to sign everyone, but we have to make decisions over the summer. We look at the performances of players and then we do the math.”
