Biography of the Lord Mayor of Nottingham

Councillor Michael Wildgust is the current Lord Mayor of Nottingham. He was installed as Lord Mayor at the Council meeting on May 9th 2011.

Michael was born on 2 March 1943 in Arnold, Nottingham. He has one brother, Barrie who is five years younger than him and both his parents are deceased.

He attended Front Street Primary School, Arnold and then Redhill Secondary School. While at Redhill he captained the football team, and also played cricket for the school. He had a very keen interest in Athletics and in 1958 he won the All England Schools Cross County Championship for running. He represented the city at football and also ran for the Nottinghamshire athletics club.

He played football for Arnold St.Mary's Colts (now known as Arnold Town) and captained the team. While playing for the team he received an injury that put an end to his active sporting life.

He left school at the age of 15 and began his working career as an apprentice at Nottingham Gear Company in Basford. From there he went to work for British Rail at Queens's Walk goods depot and from there he was transferred to Fashionflow, Marks and Spencer Division, and was partly responsible for them becoming a national name along with B.O.C. While working for Fashionflow he became a National Union of Railwaymen representative.

Michael was first elected to Nottingham City Council in 2007, representing Bestwood Ward. He has served on many committees including: Licensing and Regularities, Backbench Management Committee, Health and Scrutiny Management Committee for City and County and been chairperson of Area 2. Michael is also a trustee for Nottingham Citizens Advice Bureau and is very committed to getting things done.

Michael married Carole in 1981 and they have one daughter, Clare Anne Marie, who is 28 years old.

Michael's interests outside of the city council are sport, 60s and country and western music and following Nottingham Forest Football Club, he is also a keen Nottingham Panthers supporter. He also tries to find as much time as possible to spend with his family.

Carole was born in 1949 at Catterick Army Camp, Yorkshire and then came to Nottingham in 1952 after spending a few years as an army child in Germany.

Carole has three brothers and three sisters who all attended Padstow School Basford.

After leaving school, Carole worked for Simon and May Co Lace industry and from there she moved on to becoming a nurse for the elderly. After this she spent all of her time bringing up Claire and also caring for her mother who suffered with cancer and passed away a short time after.

Carole's interests include gardening, cooking and watching TV soaps.

Carole has always supported Michael in his political career and is very proud of representing Nottingham as the Lady Mayoress.
