Tom Hanks Set To Produce Neil Gaiman's American Gods TV Series For HBO

The acclaimed novel from Sandman writer Neil Gaiman is set to be devolved for teh small screen, and Hanks' production company will be producing it. Click for the details..
Tom Hanks' Playtone Productions(along with partner Gary Goetzman) will be in charge of bringing American Gods to our TV screens in an open ended, six season adaptation for HBO.

From THR..

The series-in-development, revolving around the question “are you a god if no one believes in you?” is executive produced by Goetzman and Hanks, with Bob Richardson, and Gaiman on board as executive producer and writer.
Each of the six seasons will be of 10-12, hour-long episodes with a budget of around $35-40 million per season, targeted to debut on the cable powerhouse in 2013 at the earliest.

The story ties in to Gaiman's Sandman mythology in several ways, and includes appearances from some of the same characters. According to Goetzman, we could be in for a first for TV..

“There are some crazy things in there. We’ll probably be doing more effects in there than it’s been done on a television series."

Well, if they handle it even half as well as Game Of Thrones I will be very happy indeed. For those of you unfamiliar with the novel, it's great, go read it. Need a bit more? ok..

Released from prison, Shadow finds his world turned upside down. His wife has been killed; a mysterious stranger offers him a job. But Mr. Wednesday, who knows more about Shadow than is possible, warns that a storm is coming — a battle for the very soul of America . . . and they are in its direct path.

Cool! But where's the Preacher adaptation?
tazmaniak - 6/11/2011, 8:01 AM
6 seasons?American Gods is only 480 pages.Anansi Boys is 336 pages.

They're going to have to create a lot of new material for this series.

@marvel72 You should read it. Probably pick up a physical copy at a used book store for a few bucks or find a d/l of it in e-book format. I have the ePub on my iPhone and read on breaks/lunches at work. Such a good book.

This book is awesome and they can expand it so much. It would have been a great movie but as a tv show it could be epic.

Soooo happy Gaiman is an Exec. Producer & Writer on the show....can't get any more authentic than that!!!
Berger45 - 6/11/2011, 12:40 PM
[frick]! HBO is really going for the most awesome network on television ever award! Looking forward to this.

Talontd said it! It's gonna be great!
Intruder - 6/11/2011, 2:16 PM
@Berger45 - Umm, HBO already won that award 27 years ago with The Hitchiker and never looked back.
level1paladin - 6/11/2011, 5:39 PM
HBO is the best channel on television. If only I could get DirecTV to let me have networks and HBO only.

If you people show some support for this Gaiman work, there is a good likelihood Preacher WILL be adapted into a TV series. If you don't, then your chances of a good adaptation dwindles.
Growler - 6/11/2011, 8:03 PM
This is seriously good news, I just hope it actually happens.

Now if only HBO or Showtime would pick up Preacher...
Niuhll - 6/12/2011, 7:11 PM
There's gonna be a second book.
