The options and affordability
On May 5 and 7, 2009, Council reviewed three options for the Lane Reallocation Trial and on May 7, 2009, approved a one-lane trial on the bridge.

Options proposed
There have been several other options proposed for the Burrard Bridge but none have proven to be viable or affordable at this time. Watch the videos below to understand why.
- Cycle the Granville Bridge instead
- Separate sidewalks for pedestrains and cyclists
- Switchable lanes similar to the Lions Gate Bridge
- Widen the sidewalks for pedestrians and cyclists
- Build a bike path under the bridge
"Purpose-built" options have significant costs
The City is studying whether a lane reallocation would provide a relatively inexpensive approach to moving quickly towards improving safety on the bridge. Other options, such as the ones below, would be more expensive and take longer to implement. These costs do not include the estimated $30 million required to repair and maintain the existing bridge structure.
Millennium Bridge, London, England
$300 million
(for equivalent over False Creek)
SkyTrain Bridge, New Westminster, BC
$100 million
Burrard Bridge, Vancouver, BC
$30 million
(to expand sidewalk to
meet safety width)
