Labor Day weekend has come at last. The holiday was first celebrated in 1882 by the Central Labor Union of New York, and was made official in 1894. Without further ado, here is a list of five recipe ideas for your Labor Day weekend celebrations: 1. Black Bean and Corn Salad Now that sweet corn is fresh and abundant at local markets, it's easy to get inspired to do something different with it. Pasadena Bulldogs Look to Shock Alemany

Bulldogs open season Friday night at Alemany.

Pasadena head coach Randy Horton is well aware of the public perception surrounding the Bulldogs’ season opener Friday night at 7 at Mission Hills Bishop Alemany.  “I know nobody is giving us much of a chance,” Horton said. “Alemany doesn’t respect us.” It’s easy to understand why few think the Bulldogs are capable of knocking off the Warriors. Or keeping the game relatively close, for the matter. Alemany is widely considered to field one of the top squads in the Southland this year. The Warriors are ranked No. 5 in ESPN Los Angele’s preseason rankings, and they return 13 starters from a team that went undefeated in the Serra League last year and advanced to the semifinals of the prestigious CIF-Southern Section Pac-5 Division playoffs. …

Donnelly Slams California Dream Act Passage

The bill, allowing undocumented students access to various state-funded financial aid and scholarships, heads to the Democratic-controlled State Assembly.

As the State Senate passed the second part of the Dream Act Wednesday, undocumented students who qualify for reduced in-state tuition will be allowed to apply for various college financial aid if the Governor signs the legislation into law. Assemblyman Tim Donnelly, Sierra Madre’s representative in the 59th District, has said he would organize a public referendum if the Dream Act was passed into law. “Students are already struggling to pay increased tuition and many cannot even get into the classes they need,” Donnelly told the Victorville Daily Press, “but the Legislature continues to pretend we can afford this entitlement. The simple truth is, everyone including the governor knows we can’t.” Under AB 131, undocumented students will be …

Not only did I feel it, I predicted it! I was at my doc's office & as the nurse was heading me to an exam room, I quietly said "earthquake, earthquake." This was about 11 minutes before it actually hit. This poor nurse about had a heart attack as she told me she was petrified of earthquakes. I told her it was okay, it's not a big one. As I was leaving, about 7 nurses surrounded me with "how did …   more ›

Sierra Madre's API Scores Still Highest in District

Newly released figures show the school making an 11-point gain over last year's scores and surpassing the 900 point mark.

Figures released Wednesday by the California Department of Education show that Sierra Madre Elementary School has again achieved the highest API score of all schools in the Pasadena Unified School District. Sierra Madre Elementary achieved a score of 908, an increase of 11 points over their 2010 score. The API is a number between 200 and 1000 that reflects performance level of a school, sub group and district, based on statewide testing. Its purpose is to measure the academic performance and growth of schools. The state target is 800. While Sierra Madre School scored well above the state goal, the school district as a whole is still below the desired 800 mark, with a district-wide score of 759, up just one point over the previous year. Local 9/11 Survivor Still Touched by Terror

Paige Fillion-Hornbacher was 8 1/2 months pregnant and living just 6 blocks away when the Twin Towers fell on Sept. 11, 2001.

Paige Fillion-Hornbacher was 8 1/2 months pregnant with her son Noah when two commercial airliners slammed into the World Trade Center just six blocks from their lower Manhattan apartment. Once she realized the gravity of the situation, she set off on foot with her 2-year-old son northward through the city and away from Ground Zero.  Her husband, Scott Hornbacher--a producer on The Sopranos working in Queens--set off running across the bridge and then south through Manhattan. Miraculously, he was able to find his family amongst the thousands of fleeing and disoriented New York residents.  Paige and Noah later participated in one of the many health studies conducted following 9/11, this one geared toward looking for any negative effect on …
