Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling teamed up for Drive, a film that won praise at Cannes and a Best Director award for Mr. Refn. They’ll work together again on a remake of Logan’s Run, and possibly after that film on a romantic comedy. (Difficult to tell if that last project is real, or just a bit of junket/premiere joking.)

Before he shoots Logan’s Run, however, the director will shoot Only God Forgives in Bangkok. Luke Evans has been set to star for a couple months, but now there is a report that Ryan Gosling is in the cast as well.

Update: Variety confirms that Ryan Gosling is in negotiations for the role, and that he’ll replace Luke Evans, who dropped out due to his commitment to The Hobbit. Read More »

Joel Courtney was an unknown a few months ago; now he is on thousands of movie screens as Joe Lamb, the young man at the center of J.J. Abrams’ movie Super 8. We haven’t had much word on what he might do to follow up that film, but now there is a report that he is in talks for two roles. One of the two is among the most well-known roles a young actor could play: Mark Twain’s adventure archetype Tom Sawyer. Read More »

Brightness has been one of the most common complaints about the presentation of 3D films in the past year. And so Michael Bay and Paramount are trying to be strict with exhibitors with respect to Transformers: Dark of the Moon. The studio is pushing a specific digital print mastered to deliver “almost twice the brightness if standard 3D projection,” and Michael Bay has been pushing theater owners to project the film at the proper brightness.

This seems like a good PR move in the wake of falling 3D attendance and increasingly loud grumbling about the quality of 3D projection. But is it just a trick on Paramount’s part to score more 3D dollars while shutting out other studios from 3D screens? Read More »

Julia Ormond in Talks For ‘The Man of Steel’

Briefly: Zack Snyder has already got his cast to play Clark Kent’s adoptive Earthly parents in his new Superman tale, The Man of Steel. Kevin Costner and Diane Lane will be Ma and Pa Kent to Henry Cavill‘s Clark. But in his prior life on Krypton, Clark — aka Kal-el — has a set of ‘real’ parents. Russell Crowe has been offered the role of Jor-El, famously played by Marlon Brando when Richard Donner brought the story to the screen in 1978.

Now Julia Ormond is in talks to play Lara Lor-Van, aka Superman’s mom. (Susannah York played the role, often just referred to as Lara, in Superman: The Movie.) Deadline suggests that this is a deal that will come together quickly.

You’ll be able to see the new trailer for Captain America: The First Avenger this evening (it hits at 7:30 EST) but for now we’ve got a new poster that puts the heroic profile of star Chris Evans front and center. Advance word on the film, by way of a long-lead press screening or two, is very very good, and the movie is really starting to look like the summer action picture to beat. That new trailer will probably give us a better idea of what to expect. While you wait, check out the new poster below. Read More »

Here’s the trailer for Killer Elite, which is the Jason Statham-iest Jason Statham movie yet. The muscular star plays a killer (elite) whose mentor (Robert De Niro) is kidnapped by another killer (Clive Owen). Cue a rescue attempt and a great many instances of people talking about just what a badass Jason Statham is. Gary McKendry directs this one, which should be an instant ticket purchase for anyone who loved The Mechanic. Check the trailer below. Read More »

If you pay to see Cars 2 this weekend or in the near future you’ll be treated to a teaser for the Pixar film that is due to be released a year from now: Brave, once called The Bear and the Bow. We don’t have that teaser online just yet, but yesterday the first teaser poster arrived (complete with a small, misty look at the bear that was once in the title) and now we have good new looks at three of the main characters. Check them out, along with a high-res version of the teaser poster, after the break. Read More »

We’ve already discussed at this space the ways in which Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer seem like excellent choices to play the Lone Ranger and Tonto, respectively, in the new The Lone Ranger film. Now another actor may be joining the mix as well. Tom Wilkinson is reportedly “in early talks” for a major part in the Disney Western, which is being directed by Gore Verbinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Read more after the jump.
