Librarian Takes A Closer Look at Jedi Archives

January 4, 2011

Cambridge University head librarian for the university’s Judge Business School Andy Priestner recently blogged about his perspective on Jocasta Nu and the Jedi Archives.

It’s entertaining and informative, to say the least, to read a real librarian’s take on what it would be like to run the Jedi Archives.

Priestner writes:

I was fascinated by its incredibly old-fashioned approach to the electronic library with shelves upon shelves of what appeared to be e-books and very few computer terminals.

Apparently they were known as the Stacks and they are ‘holobook’ shelves (thought so) each containing ‘trillions of datatapes and datacards, carefully sorted and arranged into categories and subcategories’. So yes, Jocasta Nu in her infinite Jedi wisdom bought trillions of ebooks and decided that the best thing to do is to file them away on physical shelves (presumably cases with datachips in them?). Which is precisely what I think some librarians would love to do now if they had the chance!

I’m assuming that the lack of terminals is is to do with the proliferation of hand-held Jedi devices, but Wookiepedia is silent on this, although we are told that the few computer terminals that are there are linked to the main index catalog. Which leads me on to muse that it would be a very brave LAS vendor who would take on the huge Jedi Archives! Apparently the Library catalogue is touchscreen, so I hope there are plenty of monitor-wiping droids about.

Clone Wars Screening Recap: San Francisco

December 15, 2010

A clone trooper checks in at Lucasfilm HQ.

Last week fans flocked to digital theaters for a very exclusive screening on the big screen of an all-new Clone Wars villain –- the monstrous Savage Opress!

The Clone Wars screenings began in Los Angeles at the Egyptian Theatre with the voice actors, director Dave Filoni and writer Katie Lucas in attendance, along with celeb Clone Wars fans.

Screenings continued in Seattle, NYC, Philly, Dallas, Chicago, Boston, Phoenix, Atlanta, Washington D.C. and San Francisco, among others.

Cast, crew and fans alike came out in full Force at Lucasfilm’s Presidio headquarters in the San Francisco to watch this epic screening of The Clone Wars introducing Savage Opress.

StarWars.com was there to report and live tweet the event. Check out the article below for quotes from Clone Wars actor Daniel Logan, CG/FX/Lighting Supervisor Joel Aron, and more!

Joel Aron has some fun with the 501st.

Why is this story arc amazing to see on a big screen?

Joel Aron: We work on it cinematically. When you’re watching it on television you’re actually seeing just a crop of what we’re doing. Every little inch of the screen we think about — the lighting, the composition, the balance, the shapes, etc. To see it on a big screen you actually feel the cinematic pulse of the show. It’s very different when you watch it at home.

Supervising Director Dave Filoni, voice actor/sound editor Matthew Wood, and CG/FX/Lighting Supervisor Joel Aron.

Why do you think fans will get a kick out of this story arc in particular?

Joel Aron: We’re introducing a character that hasn’t been seen on the show before, and it’s a direct tie to the feature films. When that happens people automatically start to associate. There’s something connecting us to Star Wars here. And you’re seeing a long thread. In the past on the show, we’ve had just little segments, but now we’re getting an entire story arc. We have three episodes that are so seamless, you don’t even realize they’re separate episodes.

Why is it important for you to watch something like this with the fans?

Joel Aron: You get to hear what they really like, and what they react to. What Dave [Filoni] and I both do is we listen to what everybody tells us and we put it back into the show. Everything that happened at Celebration V — all the conversations — the fans really drive us to do more.

Back in November Lucasfilm Ltd. and Cartoon Network invited fans to sign up for a special, limited theatrical screening in selected areas of a big screen sneak peek at an all-new Clone Wars villain – the monstrous Savage Opress! This week The Clone Wars screenings began in Los Angeles at the Egyptian Theatre.

Cast and crew alike came out in full Force to entertain and meet the fans, which also included a few celebrities in the mix. The 501st, Rebel Legion and R2 builders attended as well, giving fans a chance to have their photos taken with clone troopers, Jedi and droids.

StarWars.com was there to report and live tweet the event. Check out the article below for quotes from Supervising Director Dave Filoni, voice actors Cat Taber, Ashley Eckstein, Nika Futterman and Clancy Brown, as well as Clone Wars writer Katie Lucas.

Aurra Sing voice actor Jaime King & Director Dave Filoni

Why do you think theatrical screenings of The Clone Wars for fans are important?

Dave Filoni: It’s just fun. Part of being a fan is seeing stuff like this together. Star Wars has always been on a big screen. I think that George wanting to put this on a big screen for fans to see is really great. It shows how much he actually cares about the fans. And it’s another great opportunity for fans to get together to watch it.

What are you most excited about this story arc for fans to see?

Dave Filoni: I’m excited for them to see this. I know this is what they want. It’s action and adventure and dark. I have a lot of friends that I worked with in the animation industry in Los Angeles and they’re all here to see it, and that makes it extra-special for me. I’m also excited for Katie [Lucas] to be here and see the fan reaction probably for the first time ever for something she’s created. So there’s a lot of positive things about this screening.

Clone Wars Cupcakes!

November 29, 2010

Check out these awesome Clone Wars cupcakes made by A Baked Creation blogger and baker Sylvia.

So, I learned something new this week. We were asked to make some Clone Wars cupcakes and really, this is what I knew about Star Wars beforehand:
There is a dark side and a not so dark side.
Having the force be with you is a good thing.
I knew that Luke’s father is Darth Vader, psht! Come on!
Yoda kicks ass and is a wise green little fellow.
I like saying the word Padawan. Padawan! Padawan!
Stormtroopers are bad!
Lightsabers look cool.
All of this happens in a galaxy far, far away.
*Smiles*

You can tell I pay a lot of attention when Howard talks about Star Wars. Which he tried to explain to me all over again when I was doing the dishes (I’m trapped!). Well, luckily he does know a thing or two about Star Wars and was a tremendous help on making these Clone Wars cupcakes with me.

Clone Trooper Training Room Recreated in LEGO

November 16, 2010

A fan recreated the training room from The Clone Wars episode “Clone Cadets” in LEGO form — complete with downed robots and weapons!

It all begins on the planet Kamino, where the training of clones who have been bred to be perfect soldiers occur. These cadets must first be subjected to intense physical and mental training before heading off to war. Five headstrong clones of Domino squad struggle to complete their training. These cadets — Hevy, Cutup, Droidbait, Fives and Echo — seem to be a “bad batch” and are unable to work as a team. They’re given a final training run to prove their mettle and the clones finally learn to work together…
