Water Safety Guidelines for Anglers

Share |

The waterways of the British Isles are some of the most beautiful in the world. However, the angler should not become complacent. Rivers, lakes, reservoirs and estuaries are dangerous environments and need to be approached with caution. We have put together these water safety guidelines for anglers, to raise awareness of the potential risks when out fishing.

  • Alcohol and water should only mix in a glass. Avoid drinking when fishing.
  • Always wear a PFD (personal flotation device) when wading in rivers or fishing from a boat.
  • Always check the strength of the current before entering the water.
  • Never enter a river or lake without first checking the water temperature.
  • Wear Polaroid glasses when wading so that you improve your chances of seeing any hidden rocks or sudden drop-offs.
  • Use a wading stick where possible to provide support. It can also be used to check the depth of water around you before moving.
  • Take great care when wading in rivers following a storm. Debris, trees and branches flowing down stream can knock you of balance.
  • Avoid entering the water when fishing at night.
  • Avoid fishing alone and wear a whistle so that you can attract attention, should you find yourself in difficulties.
  • If you find yourself caught in fast flowing water or rapids, do not panic. Try to position yourself feet first, in a half sitting position until the current subsides.
  • Approach the waterside with caution as the water might be closer than it appears. Take great care not to stand on an overhanging / undercut riverbanks.
  • Be aware of boats using the watercourse. They may not see a camouflaged angler in the water.
  • If fishing from rocks, ensure that you are wearing suitable footwear, avoid slippery and sloping edges and seek secure footholds.
  • To avoid being swept away when fishing estuaries, watch for changes in the tides and weather and be aware of being cut off by a rising tide. It is advisable to check the tide times before setting off.
  • If you become entrapped in deep mud, clay or quicksand, spread the body's weight by lying flat on the surface, and move by slow leg and arm action.
