Divisions

HAKOAH sports divisions today are: basketball, karate, swimming, tourist travels and skiing, tennis, table tennis, and hiking. During its long history HAKOAH has seen many positive changes.

When the club was founded in 1909 HAKOAH offered the following sports activities: fencing, football (soccer), hockey, track & field, wrestling and swimming.
After World War I and in spite of the difficult economic situation HAKOAH was able to add the following sport activities to their program: ice hockey, handball, chess, skiing and hiking, tennis, table tennis and water polo.
As was the fate of all Jewish sports clubs, HAKOAH was shut down in 1941 by the Nazi regime.
Shortly after World War II the HAKOAH was rebuilt by some very few who survived in Vienna and by former members who were able to flee the country. Although the number of Jews in Vienna had dwindled to a mere 6.000 and although the club was not able to take their old sports center back into possession, some sport departments were able to reopen: at the beginning swimming and track & field, then in time basketball, bridge, football, judo, karate, tennis, table tennis and water polo. Unfortunately not all departments could be sustained for a longer period.
