NSW still in with a chance for finals berth

GEMMA LAIDLER, Friday, 22 January 2010

New South Wales have kept their finals hopes alive by beating Queensland Rams 7-5 in the first game of their three game series at Holloway Field in the 2009/10 Claxton Shield.

It was a fairly quiet first five innings with the home team scoring two runs in the second to take an early lead with consecutive hits by Daniel Lamb-Hunt and Brad Dutton both bringing in runs.

NSW started stringing hits together in the sixth where they edged in front, scoring three runs, while the home side only tallied one. After that they broke away adding four runs over the next two innings where QLD could only manage an extra two.

Lamb-Hunt starred for his team with four hits, while everyone that batted for NSW recorded a hit with five doubles for the night as well as a triple by Timothy Atherton.

Timothy Cox was again solid for the visitors pitching 5.2 innings allowing eight hits, three runs and striking out nine batters, however Vaughan Harris was handed the win pitching 2.1 innings, allowing three hits, two runs and striking out three.

Queensland used four pitchers with Simon Morriss charged with the loss, allowing six hits, and five runs over 3.2 innings.
