The History Channel UK Changes Name to AETN UK - 07/02/2009



Substantial Portfolio Growth and Proliferation of Services Lead to New Corporate Branding

July 2, 2009 – London – The History Channel UK, a joint venture of A&E; Television Networks (AETN) and British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB), is changing its name to AETN UK effective immediately. The announcement was made by Tom Davidson, Managing Director of AETN UK.

The name change reflects the explosive growth of the company’s portfolio of brands in the UK from one in 1995 to seven in 2009. The company’s channel group includes HISTORY, BIO, Crime & Investigation Network (CI), Military History, HISTORY HD, BIO HD and Crime & Investigation Network HD. AETN UK operates the second largest factual channel bouquet in the UK, including two of the top four factual brands.

AETN UK’s distribution growth has been accompanied by ratings; year over year, the brand portfolio in the UK has experienced 17% growth.

Beyond UK portfolio growth, the company has significantly expanded the scope of distribution activities elsewhere, now operating services in Scandinavia, the Benelux, Central Europe, Sub-Sahara Africa, Greece and the Middle East. AETN UK now distributes 13 feeds and 22 VoD services across its territories. The combined subscriber base for the UK and EMEA services operated by the JV has grown by 300% since 1995.

The History Channel UK launched in November 1995 as the first international service for the brand. In 1998, BIO debuted in the market, followed by CI in 2006 and Military History in 2008. The JV launched the first international HISTORY HD in October 2006, and the first international services for BIO HD and CI HD in October 2008.

Since January 2009, the joint venture has launched languaged services for HISTORY and HISTORY HD in Romania, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia.

Worldwide, AETN’s international channel services have grown to 42 today. AETN’s channels are now available in over 140 countries, reaching over 200 million TV households in over 25 languages.
