Mac OS X 10.4 Help
Installing a Mac OS 9 System Folder to use with the Classic environment
To use the Classic environment in Mac OS X, you must have a Mac OS 9 System Folder installed on your computer.
IMPORTANT: If your computer did not come with a Mac OS 9 installation CD or if it will not start up from that CD, you may be able to use your Mac OS X installation discs instead. To perform the installation, follow the instructions that came with your computer. If you do not have either the Mac OS 9 or Mac OS X discs, you may be able to purchase the appropriate disc from the Apple Store online.
If your computer cannot startup using Mac OS 9, check the Apple support website for information on installing Classic.
You cannot use Mac OS 9 applications on Intel-based Macintosh computers because the Classic environment is not supported.
To install a Mac OS 9 System Folder:
- Your computer came with either a Mac OS 9 installation CD or Mac OS X installation discs. Select the appropriate disc for your computer.
- If you are installing from a Mac OS 9 installation CD, start up from the disc by holding down the C key as the computer restarts. You can release of the C key when the Mac OS logo appears. Double-click the Installer icon.
- If you are installing from the Mac OS X installation discs, insert the "Additional Software & Apple Hardware Test" disc that came with your computer. Double-click "Install Additional Software."
- Follow the onscreen instructions.
The Classic environment requires at least Mac OS 9.1, but it's a good idea to use Mac OS 9.2 or later. You can download a software update from the Apple support website.
