VF, dark green patina, mounted in a contemporary silver bezel which has been broken, most likely where a loop had been for suspension. A long series of tesserae, or tokens, was produced at the cult center of Ephesos during the Hellenistic period and later. The legends generally cannot be translated, and are probably for the most part meaningless mystical formulae.

Since 133 BC, Ephesos belonged to the Roman province of Asia and suffered from the shameless exploitation of the Roman tax collector. In 88 BC, the city revolted and went over to Mithridates VI of Pontos, who, in the so-called Asiatic Vespers, massacred thousands of Roman citizens. To pay his mercenaries, Mithradates struck large quantities of gold staters of traditional Ephesian types, but few specimens exist today.

Caecilius Metellus Macedonicus thrown off the Tarpeian Rock for expelling him from the Senate (see Livy, Per. LIX.10).
