New Issue Of Classic Rock Is Out Now

Remember Use Your Illusion? The double double albums which followed up Appetite For Destruction? The most anticipated releases of the era, they also marked the end for Guns n’ Roses as we knew them – now we’ve got the whole story in the July issue of Classic Rock.

We tell the tale of The Most Dangerous Band In The World, and how a combination of drugs, rifts, hirings and firings brought everything to chaotic crescendo.

Elsewhere in the issue, we have:

Slash
The guitar hero with the hat talks about touring with the family in tow, loving festivals, and looking forward to sharing a stage with Judas Priest at High Voltage.

Grunge Wars
Two decades ago, grunge and hair metal were the two sides in an epic battle. Veterans from both sides recount the events and try to answer the big question: so who won?

The Secret History Of Grunge
Kurt Cobain loved Sammy Hagar, Alice In Chains were once a hair-metal band, Pearl Jam owed it all to Kiss… We look at how grunge could never had have happened without many of the bands that it might have ended up destroying.

Judas Priest
Their 1978 album Stained Class set the template for the NWOBHM and thrash. When it was implicated in the deaths of two young men, it also became one of the most notorious albums in metal.

Marshall Tucker Band
They sold millions, but could never escape the shadow of Skynyrd and the Allmans. Meet the greatest southern rock band you’ve probably never heard of.

Black Country Communion
“This is my first band since Deep Purple. It’s out of this world, I’m back in a rock band, a real rock band.” – Glenn Hughes. With a second album just out, Hughes, Joe Bonamassa, Jason Bonham and Derek Sherinian look back on the journey so far.

Plus:

The Dirt
AC/DC make a nostalgic return to Hammersmith Odeon; Michael Monroe confirmed for High Voltage… Bon Scott’s life story hits to the theatre (darling); Pete Townshend gives his blessing to Roger Daltrey’s Tommy tour… Say hello to JJ Grey & Mofro and Märvel; welcome back Queensrÿche, The Straits and Night Ranger…

Photo Pass
Black Sabbath
“A chummy portrait of an increasingly dysfunctional family,” is how photographer Brian Duffy’s describes his arresting portrait of a decidedly hairy Sabbath taken in 1973.

The Stories Behind The Songs
Blondie
One Way Or Another was the song that took them from the punk clubs of New York to the arenas of the world. But what was its rather unsettling inspiration?

Q&A
Kate Bush
The first lady of art-rock on resurrecting the past, reclusiveness and the royal family.

All this, and there are also reviews of new albums from Status Quo, Eureka Machines, Blondie, Queensrÿche, Stuka Squadron, Eddie Vedder. Reissues from UFO, The Long Ryders, Caravan, R.E.M., The Godfathers, Black Sabbath. DVDs on Deep Purple, The Answer. Books on Keith Richards, Sammy Hagar, Randy Rhoads. Live reviews of Roger Waters, Rush, Urban Voodoo Machine, Jack Bruce and Joe Bonamassa.

All this and a free CD too. That’s value.

Issue 160 of Classic Rock is out right now. You don’t not want to miss it!

Walked into local newsagent this morning excited by the prospect of new issue of CR. Saw Guns n’ Bloody Roses on the cover and walked out. Shame I will miss out out an article about the great MTB. See you again maybe next month!

sounds a poor issue then not…

Damien McArdle

Classic rock what are you on about “the whole story” it’s been told time and time again in your mag alone, what’s coming next month the whole story of Led Zep IV, this is exactly the reason i stopped buying the mag rehashed garbage

rocknroll

I’ve let my subscription lapse as I’ve been a bit under-awed about recent issues. This one looks good. There are still GnR fans out there who want to read this.

Blondie articles … Good old new wave pop music, just what I want to read about in Classic Rock. Do Future Publishing have a Blondie Fan Pack out at the moment by any chance?

SteelHorse

Best issue for months!

haven’t picked up the issue yet, so i’ll reserve judgement, but i’ll be amazed if anyone has got anything new to say about UYI.

Stephen Taylor

Agree with previous comment, will be missing out this month, enjoyed last months offering. Can’t keep everyone happy I know, just I hope I don’t miss the reviews on Journey Foreigner Styx and Dio Disciples concerts as I interested what CR thought of them.

poor Paul! guns and roses on the cover!! you must have spit out the wheat between your teeth!! well don’t worry, i’m sure classic rock mag hasn’t slept a wink because you didn’t pick up their latest issue. p.s. MTB SUCKS!

Dave Meerkat

Grunge,Blondie,Kate Bush,R.E.M…..no thanks.I’ll buy Fireworks magazine instead and read about Whitesnake,Night Ranger,Foreigner,Journey,Nazareth,U.D.O.,Quo,Graham Bonnet etc.proper CLASSIC ROCK!!!!

blackfoot_strikes

Amazing issue this month, Use your illusions has never been given the proper attention, unlike Appetite which tends to over shadow just how good these 2 albums are..The Pearls of rock n roll

Whatever happened to not judging a book by its cover?!

Looks a great issue! More from the early nineties, please, best period in music.

Kurt A Van Daele

I don’t really care who is on the cover with the lead story. I live in The U.S. and subscribe for all the other news, updates, reviews, etc. I’ve always said there is more info in this ONE British magazine than ALL the Bullshit U.S. mags.(Revolver,Rolling Stone,Guitar Player,Guitar World,etc.). I swear by this magazine (and sometimes at) but look forward to seeing that plastic-wrapped sucker in my mailbox every month. Plus my issue is read by all my friends (well, both of ‘em) and they are always asking me “You done with that new issue yet?” You guys ROCK- Keep up the excellant work!!

ROCK N ROOOOOLLLLLLLLLLL dude \m/

Zzzz…think I’ll buy it just for Black Country Communion. When are the features on Uriah Heep, Warren Haynes, Neal Morse, Magnum coming?

goldnova72

Back in the late 70s , Classic Rock Radio played , Blondie , Kate , Zep , ABBA ( yeah , ABBA ) Deep Purple , Grand Funk , Fog Hat , tons of Southern bands including MTB ,and all the usual Classic Rock suspects . Yeah times have changed and some 70s music hasn’t aged well but I’m still interested in listening to it and reading about it .

As a subscriber I obviously think Classic rock is a great mag, but I do agree with the comments about too many features about g’n'r and the like. There is SO much more to ‘classic rock music’ in general than g’n'r, led zep, sabbath and all the other big names. It is continually bemoaned that mainstream media ignores rock music, however, when the rock press gives little/no coverage to less successful rock acts arent they being as bad as the mainstream media?

Its fantastic to see a feature on MTB – I’m not a huge fan of theirs but surely making people aware of them and other bands who arent well known in the UK is a good thing – theres loads of undiscovered gems waiting to be found out there: as an obsessive music fan, there is still few things that excite me as much as hearing a new ‘old’ band for the first time.

What about more in depth features on new and unsigned bands too??

I’m rarely impressed by CRs’ covers, its usually Led Zep, GnR, Kiss etcrecycled but if helps them sell more copies them its ok with me. Its all about getting the balance of the contents right, its impossible to please everyone, and to be fair they usually do.
As a bit of a Suvvern Rock fan I was disappointed with the MTB article, I wanted it to make me rush out and buy something of theirs. It didn’t I simply thought what a bunch of arrogant whingers.
