TX Legislature considers US Constitutional Convention

Ronald Reagan once said "The federal government has taken too much tax money from the people, too much authority from the states, and too much liberty with the Constitution."

Governor Perry's emergency items move forward, as a federal balanced-budget amendment resolution passed out of Senate State Affairs Committee this week. This is another one of the items on Gov. Rick Perry’s emergency agenda.

Fortunately, Senators Steve Ogden and Florence Shapiro added a provision to rescind the call for a Constitutional convention if that agenda veered away from the single item of a federal balanced-budget amendment.

We at AFP support a balanced budget at all levels of government but believe that a constitutional convention which would allow other items to be addressed would be problematic.

However, that isn’t the only thing Texans want a Constitutional Convention to do. Rep. Lois Kolkhorst is also pushing a resolution calling on Congress to convene a Constitutional Convention to draft a constitutional amendment that would spell out that “the power to regulate health and education … is reserved exclusively to the states.”
