Valdano’s signing as coach brought back excitement to the fans. With him came a handful of first class reinforcements: Redondo, Laudrup, Amavisca, Quique and Cañizares.
A crowd of over 60,000 attended the team’s presentation at the Bernabeu. One of them was a very special boy who could have never thought he would be sharing the spotlight with those same players a couple of months later. That day, Raul Gonzalez Blanco was just one Madridista more in the stands.
The tournament couldn’t have started better. Fourteen minutes into the first half and Real Madrid was already winning 3-0 against Sevilla at the Sanzhez Pizjuan. The first match ended 4-1 and after Week 4 they were already table-toppers. A 5-0 victory in Valladolid right before the Christmas break was the prelude to one of the greatest evenings at the Bernabeu; Real Madrid played host to reigning champions Barcelona. Revenge was in the air. The game, which is still talked about today, ended with a 5-0 victory for the Whites. Real Madrid headed straight for the title.
The second half of the campaign was similar to the first. Deportivo La Coruña, tough contender throughout the season, was the only obstacle on the road. Both teams clashed at the Bernabeu in Week 36, with two more to go. Real Madrid stroke first but Bebeto equalised. Time was running by and the title hanged in a thread for both teams; a goal for any of them could mean the definitive blow to the tournament. Eventually, Zamorano scored for the Whites with five minutes left and Real Madrid won yet another league title.
