Sutton’s return to the Ryman League ended with a point on Saturday after a frenetic but exciting game at Barrows Farm. On chances created U’s should have won with a bit to spare after Gavin McCallum had marked his debut with a goal within five minutes of Jamie Richards’ early opener for the home side, but with Richards missing a penalty late in the first half, and squandering a golden chance with the last kick of the game seconds after McCallum had hit the post, U’s could just as easily have lost. Injuries in training during the week to Adam Wilde and Chukki Eribenne meant that Paul Doswell had to reshuffle his side, but McCallum and Gavin Heeroo were both fit to return and U’s might, and indeed felt that they should, have had the boost of a goal inside the first two minutes. Craig Dundas ran on to a through ball and seemed to be held back by Danny Chapman but referee Ashvin Degnarain played an advantage as Dundas managed to get a shot in that was scrambled wide by goalkeeper James Hasell and U’s had to settle for a corner. Heeroo’s flag kick was headed powerfully goalwards by Chris Collins and although Danny Green did well to clear by the post, U’s had strong claims that the ball was over the line but assistant Isaac Jempeji was about five yards off the line and waved play on. Paul Nicholls’ first action came a minute later as he saved low down from James Bunn following a corner, but he was soon picking the ball out of the net as Richards placed a low shot from 20 yards beyond his dive and inside the far post. It took U’s just five minutes to level, McCallum nipping in front of his marker to volley a Craig Davis cross past Hasell. On a firm surface and in a blustery wind the football was rarely pretty, with players rarely getting time to get the ball down and referee Mr Degnarain stopping the game too frequently, but McCallum had another chance after 25 minutes when Harlow made a mess of a free kick that followed a foul for which Heeroo was booked and McCallum ran on to the long clearance but lifted his shot over the bar with more of a touch than was necessary with the wind behind him. Having perhaps hampered McCallum, the wind then almost gave Heeroo a goal when his free kick from near the half way line was tipped over by a back-pedalling Hasell. Dean Palmer glanced the resulting corner just wide, but U’s should then have gone behind when Steve McKimm’s hand knocked the ball away at the far post as Richards climbed to meet a Mark Taylor cross. McKimm was booked, but spared further punishment as Richards smashed the penalty against the crossbar. McCallum had a chance within a minute of the second half starting, seeing a shot blocked by Hasell’s legs, and good work by Dundas then set up Hann, who failed to keep his shot down. U’s found it easier to play in to the wind and chances for Harlow became more scarce, although Nicholls had to make good low saves from Clark Akers and Bunn, the latter’s a deflected shot after Collins had headed out a dangerous cross from Green. The introduction of Adam Roberts and Delando Smith gave U’s fresh legs on the flanks with fifteen minutes to go, and within minutes of coming on Roberts put McCallum through but Hasell again did well to push the ball away as McCallum tried to go round him. U’s finished strongly, and almost clinched the points when McCallum again found space and thumped a low shot which Hasell touched on to the inside of the post, the ball bouncing across goal to safety, but as U’s were cursing their luck they might have suffered worse as a mistake by the otherwise impressive Karim El-Salahi left Richards through with just Nicholls to beat, but he lifted his shot wide and then flopped on his back in horror as Mr Degnarain blew the final whistle as Nicholls took the goal kick.
