Blessing the Bad with the Good

The Mishna teaches us “One is obligated to bless the negative the same way one is obligated to bless the positive”.

The Rambam understands this to mean that since we do not know what the end of the story will be, it is not rational to be angry or upset when things go wrong. The isolated moment may seem too difficult to bear, but that is because our vision is limited to the moment.

This can be understood one of two ways. One is that we may never know why bad things happen, but we can know that we cannot understand them because our vision is limited. Therefore we should bless the bad with the good and trust that it will be good eventually. I believe this is a difficult position. What good can come from a vile murder and what good can come when the murderer is from our own community?

There is a second approach. [click to continue…]

Dvar Torah Pinchas: Warning (Spoilers)

What exactly did Moses receive on Sinai?

Some, like R’ Akiva, advance a maximalist approach and claim that Moses received everything, while others, like R’ Ishmael, advance a minimalist approach and assert that Moses received merely general categories of the commandments — in other words, what Moses received on Sinai was but a minority of the report. by Heshy Fried on July 13, 2011 · 56 comments

May Leiby Kletzky’s neshama have an aliyah – my hair stands on end, I have chills and I am deeply saddened by the news of this shocking and gruesome murder of an innocent little boy in Brooklyn. My heart goes out to the family of Leiby Kletzky. Vos Iz Neias has some pictures of the funereal which I heard was a gut wrenching event. Someone asked if I coukld have a momemt of silence on this here and blog and as with other tragedies that have struck the Jewish people – I will not write until I feel comfortable enough to make people laugh again.

by Heshy Fried on July 13, 2011 · 9 comments

Someone sent this to me – they found it on Shadchan-Shadchan, but I’ve seen it before and one of the commen ts backs me up on that.

NEW YORK – In an unusual display of unity, leaders of five Chasidic groups today issued a joint statement in support of proposed state legislation to allow same-sects marriages.

Pinchas: This Shit Is Going Down

by OfftheDwannaB on July 13, 2011 · 8 comments

I think that many people today have trouble with Pinchas. The story is pretty gruesome, especially after you read Rashi about the genital shishkebobbery and all that. What did the guy do so bad after all? Get a little Midyani action on the side? Why is that anyone’s business besides for him and God? [click to continue…]

Are there any hot girls reading this?

by Heshy Fried on July 12, 2011 · 115 comments

I know I’m gonna get a bit of flack for this post, but lets just cut to the chase, one of my good buddies is looking for a hot wife – yes I’ve tried to get him to date girls I consider hot (dude I wouldn’t touch her with your dick – is the common response) and this means that girls I find hot, are in fact not hot at all according to this shallow dude. Sure, it;s a long shot, but in the name of the shidduch crisis I have decided to write a really shallow post trying to find some hottie who needs themselves a hot man, because lets face it, hot girls know they’re hot. The Frum Satire underground

by Heshy Fried on July 11, 2011 · 18 comments

At my brothers engagement party, the hostess told me that she became friends with this other random fan of mine whom she met through my blog, it was the first time that I realized (other than the one shidduch that miraculously happened from some folks arguing in the comments)that people who were involved with Frum Satire in one way or another, were becoming involved with each other. I’m not only talking about folks hooking up and dating which has been happening as well, I am talking about regular folks, chatting, meeting for coffee and becoming online friends with each other and I feel totally awesome at this realization.
