Jellies: The Ocean in Motion

Immerse yourself in a world of jellies. From the outside, this new exhibit at Mystic Aquarium resembles a 20-foot-tall sea nettle floating on water. Under its dome, special lighting showcases the fascinating features of six very different jelly species, from moon jellies, often spotted in Long Island Sound, to unusual upside-down jellies and comb jellies, which look like they have electrical currents running through them. Guests can also see how moon jelly polyps are being cultured right at the aquarium. Trickling water from a two-sided water wall inside the exhibit adds to the experience. The wall, sponsored by Aquarion Water Company, features streams of water running over hand-blown glass fish and jellies created by renowned local artist Jeffery P’an of Prescient Studios in Stonington.

polonaise and mazurka readings

This event includes Victorian Ball Dancing, essays about the Polonaise and Mazur-Mazurka dances.  This is all free!

Skin & Bones - Tattoos in the Life of the American Sailor

American sailors have decorated their bodies with tattoos for more than 200 years. Discover why in this new traveling exhibit from Philadelphia's Independence Seaport Museum. From seasoned whalemen to World War II recruits, sailors got tattoos to show their allegiance to shipmates and longing for home. Learn the stories behind pigs and roosters, anchors and twin propellers. See how the art has changed, from a shipboard craft to a shoreside trade.

Birds of Prey

Five happily rehabilitated raptors descend on Mystic Aquarium for a special Birds of Prey Summer Series, presented in conjunction with the Audubon Society of Rhode Island, on July 2, 9, 30, Aug. 13 and Sept. 3 at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on the Sea School Green stage. A Red-Tailed Hawk, Eastern Screech Owl, American Kestrel, two Barred Owls and a Great Horned Owl will appear on the arms of Audubon educators to demonstrate the remarkable beauty and abilities of these incredible birds.

Kehler Liddell Gallery Exhibition: Hank Paper and Jason Friedes

Jason Friedes and Hank Paper, Two Solo Shows

June 23-July 24, 2011

Opening Reception: Sunday, June 26, 3-6pm; Artist Talk, 3:30pm

Kehler Liddell Gallery is pleased to present two solo shows, Jason Friedes: Domi-cells and Hank Paper: Cuba: Arrested Splendor.  Guest artist, Friedes will be showing steel sculpture and mixed media installations that respond to the metaphor of the various cages that we build around each other and ourselves. Street photographer Hank Paper’s work represents images taken over the past 10 years. Beaming through the seams of Cubaʼs majestic crumbling architecture and repressive socialist economy is an optimistic inner rhythm of the Cuban people.
