The Sparta native became a father last month, is riding a four-fight winning streak and today received his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt from Jamie Cruz.

Cruz surprised Miller while the UFC lightweight contender was rolling with fellow UFC fighter Charlie Brenneman. Miller joins his older brother, Dan, as the fourth black belt under Cruz, a student of Renzo Grazie.

Miller, who trains out of AMA Fight Club, in Whippany, said there was no listed criteria to attain the belt, but that “you gotta earn it.”

“At black belt, you start making your own game,” Miller said, referring to adapting BJJ to his own personal style.

The honor of receiving his black belt means more respect, he said, but that he is “still learning.”

Miller’s most recent win came at March’s UFC 111 in front of a pro-Miller crowd in Newark. Following the win, the 155-pounder took time off to be with his wife and newborn daughter, Amelia, and he said he “couldn’t be happier.”

But with a fight against Gleison Tibau coming in September at UFC’s Ultimate Fight Night: Maia vs. Belcher, Miller has started getting ready. A win at the Austin, Texas, event would vault him into the division’s elite, perhaps even within a victory of a title shot. The current lightweight champ is former Miller opponent and occasional training partner, Frankie Edgar.
