Top Gear stars Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond have filmed one of their madcap stunts on the Great Central Railway.

A crowd of onlookers gathered on the railway's bridges to watch the trio race cars – one towing several caravans – along the railway tracks between Quorn and Rothley station.

Photographer Joel Marston who captured their antics on camera said: "It was one of their crazy stunts and there was a few dog walkers and me watching them.

"The day I saw them was absolutely gorgeous weather and Jeremy was sitting there having a fag break."

The railway was secretive about the presenters' visit, but confirmed they had spent Tuesday and Wednesday filming there for the hit BBC programme.

In May, Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond brought Market Harborough to a standstill when they turned up in the town to ask residents how much two luxury cars were worth.

“It is most amusing looking on Youtube at the clips from Top Gear in the 1980s/1990s. Where they would drive sensible family cars and comment on the road noise, average mpg and how big the boot was. Clarkson and co are trio of prize plonkers - but for a sunday evening show Top Gear hits the mark, as long as you dont take it too seriously.

“The programme is puerile. Just men behaving badly and as a serious motoring programme, it has become a total waste of time and effort.”

“Used to enjoy this programme yaers ago, as a motoring programme I no longer do.
As a way to have a laugh, then OK”
