Cold and flu season is in full effect and most of us are popping vitamin C left and right in hopes of avoiding the bugs. Unfortunately, according to a recent article in the New York Daily News, a recent study by the American College of Physicians shows that vitamin C may not have any real effect on cold prevention. But if taking a trip to the doctor isn't something you look forward to or want to shell out money for, here are some odd remedies that can help alleviate some minor aches and pains.

Recently, the New York Times published a column about humming to help protect against sinus infections. Basically, when you hum you keep the air flowing between the sinuses and nasal cavity which keeps the sinuses healthy. Airflow is what prevents sinus infections, so hum daily to keep the nasty infection away.

After all the holiday festivities, we've all probably put on a few pounds. A study shows that drinking a glass of water before your meals will help you to feel full before you eat any solids. Makes sense? I think so. Fill your stomach with the purest form of hydration before adding fats and calories to it, which in turn helps you ward off unwanted weight.

What about during dinner? Well, studies show that drinking a glass of wine with your dinner may aid digestion. Really? Sign me up! Apparently, drinks that are fermented like wine, beer and sherry simulate gastric acid which helps speed up the digestive process.

Ever suffer a burn from oil spattering from your pan? No fear. Grab a nearby potato and put it on the burn to ease the pain. The water content of the potato takes the heat out of the burn without sealing it in. And best of all, it's something you probably already have in your kitchen.

If you are clumsy or bruise easily, the next one is for you: Get a slice of raw onion and tie it to your bruise for six hours. When you remove it, the bruise should be gone. Hmm, sounds interesting. I may have to try this the next time I run into the table, again. You might also want to shower after removing the onion--or you can just walk around smelling like salsa.

Got the hiccups? This can be annoying especially if you are trying to talk to someone. Swallowing a teaspoon of dry sugar can end your hiccups in a matter of minutes. Or, try a spoon of peanut butter. Pretty cool stuff huh?

This last one is quite funny. Ever hear of Laughercise? Me neither. But laughing for twenty minutes has the same effect as working out at the gym. So if you don't feel like sweating at the gym, pop in a funny video or hang with a fun friend and laugh it up! Who wouldn't want to laugh and feel healthier?

What are some odd health remedies you've heard of or tried?
