Alder buckthorn - Frangula alnusAlder buckthorn - Frangula alnus © Dr Chris Gibson/English Nature The alder buckthorn is often found growing on damp ground with alders, hence the name. It is a handsome, thornless, deciduous, bushy shrub. The ovate leaves emerge from very hairy leaf buds and turn an attractive yellow in autumn. They have largish berries that change colour from green to red to dark purple as they ripen. This is a good plant for bees and is also one of the two main foodplants for the caterpillars of the brimstone butterfly, the other being buckthorn Rhamnus cathartica.
