Loughnane has desire to stay on despite harsh criticisms

GALWAY hurling boss Ger Loughnane has expressed his desire to manage the Tribesmen for another year – but insists the county has to be more pro-active in seeking a change in the current All- Ireland championship structure.

Loughnane attended the monthly meeting of the Hurling Board at the RaheenWoods Hotel, Athenry on Tuesday night and submitted his report on the Galway hurlers’ campaign of ’08. He later fielded questions from delegates, some of whom expressed their disappointment at the county’s lack of success once again.

Indeed, one delegate believed Ger Loughnane had failed as manager of the Galway senior hurlers in his first two years in charge and, in particular, he queried the tactics ofthe seniors in their second half display against Cork.

However, Loughnane defended his decision to employ the extra man at theback, after Cork had been reduced to 14 men, noting the most important thing at that stage was to prevent the Leesiders from scoring.

Loughnane, who was unavailable for comment despite repeated attempts byTribune Sport on Wednesday, expressed an interest in a third term, but not under the current championship system.
