She is currently preparing for the World Bodypainting Festival where she will be painted by special effects artist Raquel Guirro Interview by Daragh Reddin If youre a lot of people its a protest, but if youre just one person riding your bike in the nip, youre just the local looney As spokesperson for the World Naked Bike Ride which took place in Cork yesterday, how did you prepare for pedalling in the nip? The key to a lot of my life has been doing things first and assessing the impact at a later stage. Mostly, I spent my time trying to convince people to come along. If youre a lot of people its a protest, but if youre just one person riding your bike in the nip, well, then youre just the local looney. Why a naked cycle? The most important aspect was to highlight the overuse of oil but it also has to do with body image so it was great that so many older people turned up. We were making a stand against this trend towards photoshopping celebrities and models this idealised body imagery is entirely false but has saturated the media. Any saddle sores? No, we only cycled for half hour so no injuries. Your bodypainter for the World Bodypainting Festival in Austria is Raquel Guirro, who has worked on Guillermo Del Torros Pans Labyrinth. Has she something suitably ghoulish in mind? Yes! We always hold down the ghoulish end of the festival. This year her designs are a praying mantis-type insect with a remote-controlled moving headpiece (one of Raquels specialities) and an alien with a far- out head-design. One of the things I love about working with Raquel is that she always takes a really original approach to the themes. Talk me through the event. On the first day of our competition, we prepare the equipment in the tent weve been allocated. We barricade the front with benches, because it deters photographers from coming into the tent (this is necessary, because the experience is similar to being hounded by paparazzi). At the starting point, Raquel literally goes in the zone and applies the paint and prosthetics like a maniac for the rest of the day. The second night is the stay sane while youre under the brush, as it were? It takes seven hours to get everything on, but its so intense it goes by in a heartbeat. There are thousands of people taking photos and asking questions, which I field in order to leave Raquel free to concentrate. Youre currently completing a PhD in International Law at Trinity College. Does the sober world of jurisprudence not conflict with your other interests? Bodypainting is fine art. It should not be confused with wandering around nightclubs with gold paint sloshed over you. Its possible people might feel that because I work as a model I could be an intellectual lightweight, but its a mistake they tend to only make once. Which film lawyer do you most admire? Kevin Costner in JFK was pretty good. Theres also an excellent documentary on (real-life lawyer) Jacques Verges called Terrors Advocate, which I love. www.roslynfuller.com same, except that they announce the winners after the stage show, and we get fireworks, and then a crazy party. As a human canvas, which creation were you most reluctant to wash off afterwards? It would have to be a glitter dress Nina Moore did for a shoot at Samsara Nightclub. Part of the reason is probably that although itchy, it was still easier than wearing prosthetics. At a certain point it becomes your lifes dream to get them off, have a bath and eat! Does it tickle? Just in the usual tickly places, like armpits and bottoms of feet. Have you ever been injured by an over-zealous painter? So far no one has stabbed me with a brush, or attempted to cut my ear off, but once Raquels hot glue gun dripped on my stomach. Hot glue on a stomach very painful. I still have a tiny scar from that.
