Skills

Communication skills

As a former teacher, effective communication has been a normal part of my daily work for two decades. I can adapt my style to a variety of situations. I have considerable experience of speaking in local community meetings and colleges, to industry and in the European Parliament. I have taken part in many public debates and been interviewed by press, radio and TV, including live TV and live radio phone-ins. I recently took part, from home, in a 3 a.m. Internet conference link with Labour's sister party in Japan. I am beginning to use the Internet and have a web-site to enhance my services to the public. I am an experienced chairperson and the author of many policy documents for European Parliament committees as well as articles on issues including public services, steel, chemicals and various environmental issues.

Campaigning skills

I am an effective campaigner on the doorstep and elsewhere. I have fought three successful and one unsuccesful European Parliament campaigns as candidate. In the last two General Elections I did 'key campaigner' work in Westminster marginals and provided support facilities. I played a major role with local authorities in obtaining Objective 5b status for parts of North Yorkshire. I have worked with local community organisations, local authorities, trade unions and businesses on constituency campaigns to: build a long term future for the coal industry in the UK, upgrade the notorious A66, clean up Yorkshire beaches, oppose proposed power lines through Yorkshire, and develop a sustainable energy strategy for Yorkshire. In Spring 2000 I was nominated in this year's "Green Ribbon" Political awards as recognition of the role I have played in creating a safer and more sustainable world for ourselves and future generations.

Representational and problem solving skills

For six years as a Borough Councillor I undertook considerable casework and advocacy on behalf of people with diverse needs. I have developed these skills, enabling me to act as an advocate at the highest level. I have also learnt to seek consensual solutions to complex problems. In the parliament I have been allocated on several occasions, the senior responsibility of rapporteur. I have also been the parliament's spokesperson at several major conferences. A scientific background helps me to apply an analytical and methodical approach to problem solving. I am accustomed to taking a comprehensive, strategic view of problems, and then to apply careful monitoring and lobbying in order to achieve progress. Skills also include a grasp of complex budgets: in the Environment Committee was the Socialist Group spokesperson on the budget. I was one of the few MEPs with extensive experience in the parliament's conciliation process.

Interpersonal, team-work and liaison skills

I like to apply the European Parliament's style of operation: negotiation and consensus seeking rather than confrontation, to most of my work as an MEP. As a former councillor for a ward with a high concentration of ethnic minority residents, I understand the importance of respecting differing cultural traditions and trying to see issues from others' perspectives. As a spokesperson or rapporteur I have taken responsibility for ensuring good communications and working relations with colleagues. Liaison is a key function in my role as link-person between Labour MEPs and UK environment ministers. Years of successful relationship-building and networking with European Union institutions have helped me to assist local authorities, businesses, trade unions and community groups, by helping them to access those institutions to help obtain resources and support.

Other skills

My technical and scientific background has greatly assisted my work on environment and industry policy. My Diploma in Management Studies aids my understanding of business and helped me to establish an efficient constituency office, which serves the Labour Party and the region.

Language skills

I continue t develop my language skills. I have taken a number of intensive courses and I have regular lessons in Brussels. My French is proficient for French radio and TV interviews and it has helped me to build good working relationships with French speaking colleagues.
