Neue Studien gehen davon aus, dass das gesundheitliche Risiko von Tritium jahrelang stark unterschätzt wurde (siehe WOZ Nr. 37/10). Kohlenstoff-14 hat eine Halbwertszeit von über 5000 Jahren, verhält sich wie gewöhnlicher Kohlenstoff und wird in Pflanzen eingebaut. Der radioaktive Kohlenstoff kann – wie auch das Tritium – vor allem in den ersten Tagen und Wochen nach der Befruchtung Föten schädigen.

Die Aufsichtsbehörden wissen, dass die Stoffe heikel sind, und haben dem Zwilag zwei verschiedene Grenzwerte auferlegt. Im Frühjahr, während der Vegetationsperiode, liegt der Grenzwert um das Zehnfache tiefer als im Winterhalbjahr. Man geht davon aus, dass im Winter die radioaktiven Stoffe nicht in die Pflanzen eingebaut werden und sich weiträumiger verteilen. Heep sagt, dass sie die erlaubten Grenzwerte um den Faktor zehn unterschreiten würden. Gemäss den Berichten des Eidgenössischen Nuklearsicherheitsinspektorats setzen die Schweizer Atomkraftwerke tatsächlich bis zu hundertmal mehr Tritium frei als das Zwilag. Und auch der Ofen gibt bis zu 10 000-mal weniger radioaktiven Kohlenstoff ab als alle anderen Atomanlagen zusammen.

It might be understandable why it is foolish this systemic error urged me partly to become highly specialized concerning this topic, why my colleagues have to take care now for their operations quickly. The reasons are often simple: It is not understandable why the possible production of black holes for example is widely academically discussed and to a large extent experimentally justified with regard to never observed Hawking radiation. over its lifetime bounds p on p is less than 2 * 10-11, 10-5, 2 * 10-6 and 1 for cases I-IV respectively.”

I repeat and explain since I believe the authors have their reasons to construct these four scenarios NOT based on the worst case, purely central production and obviously not breaking the laws of physics. Naturally occuring collisions on the moon are discussed and probabilities p for producing a dangerous strangelet at RHIC are calculated:

p for RHIC energies and gold on iron collisions (not lead on lead like at ALICE) is less than 1 for scenario IV.

p for RHIC energies and iron on iron collisions (again not lead on lead) is less than 10-5 for scenario II.

Energies are about 30 times higher in the ALICE heavy ion experiment, according to formula 15 in the above mentioned article this worsenes the results for both scenarios by a factor of 324 yielding for scenario II a p less than about 0.003. Case IV should be appropriately augmented which means no safety is provided. The parameter by which the total number of collisions at RHIC is considered (called p as well) is left unchanged to facilitate calculations here: 2 * 10-12.

Those safety margins are far from what the LSAG report from 2008 is telling. The cited publication is one of the most important and most careful among these studies. Additionally CERN like stated above still prepares itself for strangelet search with CASTOR.
