Kalmadi to skip House, Raja, Kani need nod

If the jailed former CWG chief and Congress MP Suresh Kalmadi expressed his “inability” to attend the forthcoming Monsoon Session, law minister M. Veerappa Moily left it to the courts to decide whether DMK MPs A. Raja and Kanimozhi, both lodged in Tihar Jail, can attend Parliament.

In a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar on Friday, Congress MP Suresh Kalmadi has expressed his inability to attend the coming Monsoon Session of the Lok Sabha. Sources said Mr Kalmadi asked for the relief “due to prevailing circumstances”.
Mr Kalmadi, who represents Pune in Lok Sabha, was removed as Congress parliamentary party secretary and sacked as the Commonwealth Games organising committee chief. He was arrested by the CBI in alleged irregularities in the conduct of the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
Meanwhile, Dr Moily stated that Mr Raja and Ms Kanimozhi can attend Parliament provided they seek permission from the court.
On being asked if the two MPs accused in the 2G spectrum allocation scam can be allowed to attend the House, the law minister stated that the two were still members of Parliament. “The two of them are still sitting MPs and the can attend the proceedings of the House if they can secure the permission of the court. We should remember that the two are only accused persons in a case and even a formal trial is yet to commence in the case,” Dr Moily added.
The law minister’s clarification came on the issue after reports in a section of the media that the two MPs were planning to attend Parliament. The Monsoon Session of Parliament is scheduled to begin from August 1.
Sources stated that several leaders who were under judicial custody have attended Parliament over the last few years. Jharkhand MP Madhu Koda under judicial custody had attended Parliament after securing permission from the courts.
