Rory Gallagher: Irish Tour 74: Blu-Ray review

Written by Dan Savoie on Thursday, 28 July 2011 19:07

Rory Gallagher - Irish Tour '74

Rory Gallagher's 1974 tour of Ireland coincided with one of the most tumultuous times in Belfast. Violence was erupting throughout the city even at rock concerts. As a result, many rock acts refused to play in the city. Nevertheless, Gallagher included a stop in Belfast on the tour and was rewarded with one of his best shows. Director Tony Palmer filmed many of the concerts on the tour and originally planned to use it for a television special, but he later found the footage so good that he released it as a theatrical motion picture. What Eagle Rock has released is that original 1974 rockumentary, complete with a few unearthed extras.

Although limited by the quality of the original source recordings, Irish Tour '74 takes the viewer on a trip to a time when the music really mattered. Even 36 years later, the performances, which are limited in material to only the first few albums, has the blues/rock guitarist at his best. Maybe it was the Irish crowd cheering him on, or maybe it was his will to perform where others wouldn't, you can see the magic in the air and you can feel the chills in a guitar masters work.

Although the quality is fair for a long archived music documentary from 1974, it was probably unnecessary to release it on Blu-Ray. The video presentation did not benefit from a High Definition transfer, but the music and soud transfer was amazing - it felt and sounded like a torn and weary Ireland.

With only nine songs, Irish Tour '74 comes to a close at 123 minutes, making the performance seem like an amazing jam session. There isn't a truely skilled blues/rock guitarist out there that wouldn't stare at Irish Tour '74 in astonishment. I even recall Brian May of Queen wondering where Gallagher got his sound from.

For those unfamiliar with Gallagher, Irish Tour '74 could come across as an old video of an older style of music. But that's wherein lies the magic of Rory Gallagher. People do not play like this anymore. It's all too calculated, computerized and homogenized today. In 1974 Europe, Gallagher was the blues king and watching his band react and play to his performance shows the skill and musicianship it took in those days. With Gallagher's timely death in 1995, his original rock blues combination came to an end. But the handful of recordings, dating all the way to 1990, and now this home video, lives on.

Beastly - DVD Review

Written by Dan Savoie on Thursday, 28 July 2011 19:01

Beastly

Seventeen-year-old Kyle (Alex Pettyfer) is the spoiled, shallow and incredibly popular prince of his high school kingdom. Entirely captivated and empowered by his own physical appearance, Kyle foolishly chooses Kendra (Mary-Kate Olsen), a classmate rumored to be a witch, as his latest target for humiliation. Unfazed by his cruel behavior, Kendra decides to teach him a lesson – she transforms him into someone as unattractive on the outside as he is on the inside. Now he has one year to find someone who can see past the surface and love him, or he will remain “Beastly” forever. His only hope, an unassuming classmate he never noticed named Lindy (Vanessa Hudgens), may be his best chance to prove that love is never ugly.
Sound familiar? It should. It’s the basis for Beastly, a modern take on the classic Beauty and The Beast story with a bit of a modern dark undertone, similar to that of Twilight and Red Riding Hood. Executed quite well, this teen romp delivers attractive teens, an engaging story and the hottest new female lead on the market – Vanessa Hudgens.
Relatively unknown beyond Highscool Musical and the Disney world, Hudgens is adorable as Lindy. As her year with Kyle unfolds, one can’t help but feel for the ugly one as he tries to gain her heart. Her innocent and almost forgiving attitude carries the character as she falls in love with the beast.
The entire film was cast well. Pettryfer is a teen heartthrob with only a handful of credits. Hopefully this strong performance will lead to more from this up-and-comer in the future. Mary-Kate Olsen was seductive in her witchly ways and Neil Patrick Harris (Kyle’s blind tutor) is always a blast.
Written and directed by Daniel Barnz (Phoebe in Wonderland), Beastly is based on the Alex Flinn novel of the same name and draws heavily from its Beauty and The Beast roots. Barnz did a great job piecing together an original looking film that feels like Twilight, but lacks the vampire and werewolf bites. A nod should also go to the entire makeup department for making the über attractive Pettyfer look like a morbid freak.
The DVD features an alternate ending, some deleted scenes, some behind the scenes material and a couple music videos. There’s also a cool 3D wrap around cover and a limited edition magnet frame inside the first edition box.
Beastly is a witty film with a familiar story and a strong cast. Well worth the effort.
