THE ONLINE 1835 LATTER-DAY SAINTS' HYMNAL

T here is much uncertainty about which tunes the Latter-day Saints sang in Kirtland with their words-only hymnal.  In the early 19th century, lyrics and tunes were highly interchangeable.  A given hymn text would often be sung to different tunes by different congregations.  The hymnals of that era would sometimes include the same hymn more than once, set to different tunes.

This list represents the most complete effort to date to recreate the 1835 LDS hymnal in its entirety.  It is possible that some of the more obscure LDS lyrics listed here were never even sung in the Kirtland era.  If that is the case, then this may the first time that some of these poems have ever been set to music.

NOTES:
(1) "Now Let Us Rejoice" was sung to the same tune as "The Spirit of God" in 1836 (HOSANNAH).
(2) THE AMERICAN STAR was only used for about two months in early 1836.  By the time of the Kirtland Temple dedication in March 1836, it had been replaced by HOSANNAH.

The "Tune Probability" indicates the likelihood that these lyrics were actually sung to this tune by the Saints:

Possible:           The tune "fits", but there is no known historic connection between the words and music.
Probable:          Historic or textual clues suggest that the words and music were associated.
Definite:           The words and music have been found together in a non-LDS hymnbook from that era.
However, many tunes have more than one "definite" reference in early hymnbooks.
Definite LDS:  There is a historic LDS reference to both the words and the tune.

No.

Know then that every soul is free
Let ev'ry mortal ear attend
What fair one is this
Glorious things of thee are spoken
The time is nigh, that happy time
Redeemer of Israel
See all creation join
O happy souls who pray
From the regions of glory
He died! The great Redeemer died
Earth with her ten thousand flowers
Praise to God, immortal praise
Guide us, O thou great Jehovah
We're not ashamed to own our Lord
Joy to the World
An angel came down from the mansions
To him that made the world
Now let us rejoice
Ere long the vail will rend in twain
My soul is full of peace and love
The happy day has rolled on
The great and glorious gospel light
This earth was once a garden place
Gently raise the sacred strain
When Joseph his brethren beheld
Now we'll sing with one accord
Through all the world below
The sun that declines in the far western sky
The towers of Zion soon shall rise
Let all the saints their hearts prepare
Let us pray, gladly pray
Awake, O ye people! the Savior is coming
What wond'rous things we now behold
There is a land the Lord will bless
There's a feast of fat things for the righteous
There's a power in the sun
Lord in the morning thou shalt hear
Once more, my soul, the rising day
See how the morning sun
My God, how endless is thy love
Awake! for the morning is come
Awake, my soul, and with the sun
Come let us sing an evening hymn
Lord thou wilt hear me when I pray
Glory to thee, my God, this night
Great God! to thee my evening song
When restless on my bed I lie
The day is past and gone
The gallant ship is under way
Farewell, our friends and brethren
Yes, my native land, I love thee
Adieu, my dear brethren adieu
Come ye children of the kingdom
Jesus Mighty King in Zion
In Jordan's tide the prophet stands
Salem's bright King, Jesus by name
O God th' eternal Father
T'was on that dark, that solemn night
Arise, my soul, arise
Behold the Savior of mankind
Alas! and did my Savior bleed
When earth was dress'd in beauty
O stop and tell me
And did my Savior die
Come all ye sons of Zion
Let Zion in her beauty rise
Jesus the name that charms our fears
Come all ye saints, who dwell on earth
God spake the word, and time began
Great is the Lord: 'tis good to praise
The glorious day is rolling on
Before this earth from chaos sprung
Thy mercy, my God, is the theme of my song
From Greenland's icy mountains
O Jesus! the giver of all we enjoy
In ancient days men fear'd the Lord
Mortals, awake! with angels join
The Lord into his garden comes
I know that my Redeemer lives
How often in sweet meditation, my mind
Let thy kingdom, blessed Savior
How firm a foundation
How pleasant 'tis to see
How pleased and blest was I
Though in the outward church below
O God! our help in ages past
Hark! from the tombs a doleful sound
Why do we mourn for dying friends
Why should we start and fear to die
The Spirit of God like a fire is burning
The Spirit of God like a fire is burning
