Gamer as Cannibal

In GP's worldview, there's certainly room to debate game content and the effectiveness of ESRB rating system. However, the silliest video game criticism ever may be charges of cannibalism leveled amidst all of yesterday's hurly-burly.

While GP admits to not having played F.E.A.R., one of the games mentioned as a flesh-eater, I have wasted hours and hours with the other "cannibal" title, Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse.

This is perhaps the funniest video game ever, full of dead-on humor. If you haven't had the pleasure, Stubbs is a comic send-up of the 1950's zombie film genre. Yes, your zombie character eats brains. Yes, it's silly and morbidly funny. But... isn't that what zombies do in films like the George Romero classic, Night of the Living Dead?

This ridiculous cannibalism charge unfortunately has the potential to spread virally in the mainstream media because it makes for a short, scary, memorable headline. GP will paste in articles that pick up the cannibalism theme after the jump. So far, we've counted THIRTY-SIX mainstream outlets that covered the cannibalism angle; most made it their headline or covered it in the first paragraph... Looks like the Associated Press put the cannibalism story on the wire, so expect it to show up everywhere over the next several days.

We counted mainstream media ONLY. This list does not include blogs or the video game press:

Ah, but in NotLD the movie, you don't eat the controller, er, brains, yourself, you just watch someone else. :P

I honestly think that the reason they are afraid of Cannibilism is because they're jealous. I mean, if people start eating brains, the NIMF and company will never be targeted, and that makes them into sad pandas.

Really. I don't think people are giving minor AND mature gamers enough credit. Who's going to start eating brains because they played Stubbs?! It's OBVIOUSLY a fioctional and outlandishly animated GAME. It seems people who DON'T game are having a harder time distinguishing between fact and fantasy than us poor, misguided, delusional game consumers. [info]yukimurasanada
2005-11-30 08:25 pm UTC (link)
Having played and finished Fear, I can say with no doubt, that the game in no way endorses cannibalizm, in fact, the exact opposiste is true. The main villian, the only charecter ever seen eating anyone, is bordline psycho at the start and proceeds to a full on nut job in short order. He's viewed as insane, unbalanced, and a major enemy to defeat.

Fear is probably many times Smarter and more complex then most any action movie corrently out. it's ironic that these reporters totally failed to understand anything they saw in fear. While stubbs is a humorous story and done for laughs mostly, Fear takes itself very serious and deals with a lot of subjects.

Anyway, it's crap like this that pisses me off. Also, roger ebert is a fat moron whose ass should have been in a giant sized coffin from heart failure years ago. he's ignorant, self serving, and stupid enough to give JT a run for his money. He doesn't understand games and thus, should not ocmment on them. Then again, he rarely if ever understands movies, and that never stopped him before.

So Lieberman, your saying that parents giving their guns to children and telling them to go out and kill people is a better lesson than a kid playing a zombie in a videogame?!?!? and this guy says he is a devouted Jew?!?

Seriously, this guy is saying that giving your child an M-rated game is worse than killing someone in front of them and telling them its fun or going out and killing animals for no reason and telling them its fun.

Wow, for a country that is overwhelmed by censorship, US politicans really need to get their facts straight especially when you go out and say somthing really stupid like this

No, Lieberman is an idiot.

He puts out this "I'm harmless" aura. That's how he keeps getting re-elected. But he's coming up for re-election this year, and I'm damned sure not voting for him. I'm a card carrying Democrat, and I'll vote for whoever opposes him.

"Have video games gone too far?" - I'd suggest voting.

I voted : Sort of, but why should they be treated different than movies?

The reason: Game developers have been trying so hard to push the limits of good taste that extreme violence almost defines the game industry at this point. And to make things worse, a company that tries to avoid all of this (Nintendo, for one) is instead considered "kiddie" and "uncool" because they don't allow the player to eat brains and slice people up with knives.

At the same time, I think this is just because the game industry is still in the "young and stupid" phase, and I think it'll even itself out if these politicians would stop forcing it to fight back.

I voted "No." Why? I disagree with almost everything you just said. The industry is more mature than ever, and our opponents don't like it. But they need to get used to it.

And Nintendo isn't looked at as "uncool" because they don't rely on violent titles. They bring in more money from making games than their competition does, believe it or not.

A little bit off topic, but I followed one of the links off that page and found this http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9129712/

I thought it was an interesting and extremely well-reasoned article from the point of view of a parent who is intimately familiar with games as both a player and a developer.

If more parents followed his advice, would we even need game legislation? Would we need people like Jack Thompson to campaign for the "protection" of children?

Then there's the article "When gamers become parents" that discusses how some parents deal with video games and their own children. I mean, it doesn't take much effort to sit and talk to them about issues.

...then again, I'm noticing a disturbing trend in how parents handle sensitive issues with their kids. Most would rather turn the other cheek instead of earning their grey hairs. Whatever happened to the sit-down talks where parents air the issue out and engage the children in the discussion?
