Lets Celebrate Afro-Colombian Day!

The Culture, Recreation and Sport Department (SCRD, in its Spanish initials) invites all Bogotans to celebrate six days of continuous parties in honor of the multicultural component that unites all the races of our country.

This celebration is realized within the frame of the commemoration of the Cultural Diversity World Day for Dialogue and Development of the UNESCO and the National Afro-Colombian Day which is celebrated on May 21.

For Rudesindo Castro, coordinator of ethno-education in the Black Community Organization (ORCONE, in its Spanish initials), "this celebration is a way of showing support to the Afro-Colombian community of our country".

The Afro-Colombian Day is commemorated since 2001, date which was established through Law 725, in memory of the 150 years of the abolition of slavery in Colombia, consecrated on May 21, 1851.

This party reflects the ethnic and multicultural character of the nation. In addition, it also seeks to evoke the importance of the Afro population and their value in history.

The celebration also seeks to incentives the participation of the Afro community, public entities, private companies and the citizenship in general, under the motto of the actual administration, "Bogotá Without Indifference".

"Our labor in the country and the capital is represented in the different roles that we occupy in society. For example, in the National Games, the Afro-Colombian participants reached a participation of 60%, there are 3,200 Bogotá teachers and countless contributions in the cultural an artistic sectors," said Castro.

There will be six days where you can feel the essence of the Afro-Colombian population through their joy and beauty.

The SCRD, (this link is in Spanish), the District Institute of Participation and Community Action, The District Consulting Black Community Commission and the Ministry of Culture (this link is in Spanish) came together to support and celebrate this week with different activities.
